Daniel Bryan…..A Modern Day Mystery

Friday 17th July 2015, In an interview segments Daniel Bryan says his career is over.

Friday 17th July 2015, Daniel Bryan tweets that he will return to the ring.

Daniel Bryan has had a rollercoaster ride in WWE, from NXT ‘rookie’ to WWE Icon and future Hall of Famer. 2014 was arguably the greatest year in Daniel Bryan’s career, the near year long storyline that started at SummerSlam 2013 to the closing moments at Wrestlemania 30 was truly the stuff of dreams. In one night at Wrestlemainia 30 Bryan proved everyone wrong as he defeated Triple H, Randy Orton and Batista at the same event to become the WWE world heavyweight champion.

There is no denying that Bryan was WWE’s supreme worker over the last five years, competing in competitive hard thought matches Bryan was the measuring stick. 2014 was extra special for Bryan as he did what people thought he couldn’t, but along the way did Bryan pay a price for his hard work? Shortly after the WM moment he entered into a feud with Kane which culminated at Extreme Rules in a No DQ match, in a very entertaining, thrilling match Daniel came out the winner. In the weeks proceeding Wrestlemania Bryan got married and his father also sadly passed away so there was no denying the time was a stressful and emotional one for him. On top of that Bryan, always the professional stuck to his commitments to WWE and stayed on course.

After Extreme Rules Kane attacked Bryan on Raw to excuse him from TV as at some point in May he lost feeling in his right arm, WWE did the right thing by taking precautions with him. It seemed however that the situation was more dire than first thought, to keep things going from a storyline perspective WWE stripped him of the title on Raw prior to MITB to allow him to leave and receive surgery. During his absence Bryan underwent neck surgery and muscle activation techniques to bring feeling back to his arm. After a successful run of treatment he returned to TV in November 2014 to gloat at the recent Authority defeat at the Survivor Series, then in December he announced his intent to return to competition at the Royal Rumble.

Bryan returned to actual in ring competition on January 15th on Smackdown and picked up his storyline with the Authority, he once more had to earn his spot in the Rumble by defeating Kane. Most expected Bryan to win the Rumble as it was seen as a natural way to go since he left under a cloud the year before, however the Rumble win was going to Roman Reigns and Bryan was easily eliminated by Bray Wyatt early on in the contest. This decision once more angered the audience who chanted for Bryan for the remainder of the Rumble and booed eventual winner and face Roman Reigns. Following the Rumble Bryan was scheduled to face Reigns at Fastlane with the winner going on to face Brock Lesnar at Wrestlemania 31, once more in an exciting back and forth match Roman won and earned the right with Bryan congratulating him afterwards and giving Roman his blessing.

Without a Wrestlemania feud penciled in, WWE gave Bryan the task of reinvigorating the Intercontinental Title division due to the decline over the last six months, he was entered into a multi man ladder match which he won thankfully. Finally WWE had a wrestler they knew could bring the division back to prominence with outstanding ring work and competitive feuds. The night after Wrestlemania this seemed evident as Bryan and Dolph competed in an excellent match on Raw, Bryan won and retained at that match alone signaled what was to come with the championship around his waist. This was also the Raw at which Sheamus returned and announced his intent to defeat the little guys in WWE. Bad News Barrett the former champion signaled that he wanted a rematch and that was due to happen at Extreme Rules, however that match was subsequently cancelled as during the European tour Daniel Bryan was withdrawn from it and WWE announced he was not medically able to compete.

In mid April he was taken of all advertising for future events and taken of television, it was later revealed that Bryan had undergone an MRI scan and would be out of action for an undisclosed period of time. As a good champion who can’t compete he relinquished the IC title on May 11th Raw. Following these events WWE and Daniel Bryan have been strangely quiet about the injuries/medical condition he has suffered, no one has wanted to reveal the reasons as to why Bryan can’t compete. Daniel Bryan briefly returned at the Elimination Chamber to announce that he would return to the WWE ring and compete and also at the event he awarded Ryback the IC title.

After nearly a year out of action Bryan wasn’t the same competitor in January 2015 that he was in April 2014, injuries and time out of the ring had taken there toll, it takes time for any sports person returning to action to get back to the level they were at but for Bryan something was different. Yes he had changed his style a little but he seemed very cautious in the ring and not as adventurous as he once was, was he lacking confidence? Had the injuries stolen something from him? We as fans don’t really know but personally this wasn’t the Daniel Bryan who captured the World Title in one night. Another strange fact is that both Daniel Bryan and WWE have kept the doors closed on what the issues are, normally WWE especially in this era have been open with injuries and why talent is off TV. The lack of information has then forced fans, critics, industry insiders to make their own guesses as to why Bryan is missing, rumours and statements have been flying all over Twitter, Facebook and numerous wrestling sites since his departure.

Yesterdays news only mystified things further and then came Bryan’s tweet, my question is that wouldn’t it be easier just announce what is going on with him so everything can be cleared up? The story of Daniel Bryan is an intriguing one as there are so many questions to be asked and answers to be given.
