Davie’s Dungeon: Single Or Stable?

Welcome to the dungeon!

With the rumours of the new version of the Nation of Domination being disbanded, I had to wonder if it is more beneficial to individuals to be part of a stable rather than make it or survive on their own?

Over the years there have been many superstars who have made it up the ranks in the company by starting off as a rookie in a stable. Triple H and The Rock started off in the WWE with stupid gimmicks that were never going to get them anywhere near the main-event scene.

Being part of their respective stables, De-generation X and The Nation of Domination, they were given a chance to shine and show their abilities as they were involved in more storylines and given valuable TV time.

The fact that the two stables feuded with each other gave multiple stars the chance to shine. Some took the chance whilst others took a back seat. Chyna became a huge star by being a part of DX as she was able to be more than just another sidekick. She was involved in some of the biggest storylines and matches during the Attitude Era and it gave her career a huge boost.

If Triple H had stuck with his original gimmick, no doubt he and Chyna would have ended up as mid-card talents who would never make it to the top. It doesn’t matter if you are the best wrestler in the world, if you don’t have a good or interesting character then you won’t make it.

No-one wants to watch RAW for three hours to see the champion come out at bore them to sleep. Someone can put on a 20 minute classic every week but if they are unable to speak and communicate effectively with the live crowd then they are going to fail.
As a member of a stable, it gives the superstars with less confidence the chance to learn from others.

When we look at Evolution, the past, present and future were all in one group. Randy Orton and Batista had everything they could have wanted at the start of their careers as they were teamed with one of the greatest of all time in Ric Flair. They wouldn’t have moved up so fast if they had just been trying to succeed on their own.

Not only does a stable allow superstars to learn, shine and become huge stars, it also gives life to characters who have no direction and who are stale. (John Cena should be part of a stable!) The NWO is a great example of how being part of a group can save the careers of middle-aged superstars who are nearing the end of their career.

Hulk Hogan could have went on and on with the red and yellow, the prayers and vitamins, but it would have been the same old thing over and over again. His routine became repetitive and he needed a new lease of life. The NWO saved the careers of Hogan, Hall and Nash. They became relevant even though they weren’t the greatest in the ring.

It’s a shame that the new version of the NOD is rumoured to have been scrapped as it could have helped the careers of Kofi Kingston, Xavier Woods and Big E. Kofi’s career has been going nowhere for a long time, he should have been a top star by now as he’s been around for a while and he has the ability to entertain the fans, when given the chance.

A stable could have helped these three men but I don’t see them getting anywhere near the top for a long time, especially if they remain single competitors.
