Davie’s Dungeon: Time Has Passed For Hogan

Welcome to the dungeon!

So Hulk Hogan has said he is training for one more match inside a WWE ring – is it something we really need to see again?

Hulk turns 61 years old this month and he has had many back surgeries over the years so no matter how much training he does, he is never going to be the same Hulk Hogan that we witnessed in the 80’s and 90’s.

No matter how much passion a wrestler has for the business, they need to know when their time in the ring is well and truly over. We have seen Ric Flair try and wrestle over the past decade and in my opinion it hasn’t done anything to improve his status as one of the greatest of all time.

I’m not saying that Flair has damaged his career in the past decade by not hanging up his boots for good, it’s just that he didn’t need to wrestle at all. Whenever we have seen him in the ring it has always been the same moves over and over again. It’s all we could expect.

Some wrestlers keep performing in the ring when they shouldn’t even be thinking about it for various reasons. Some have money problems and some just can’t get it out of their system. Terry Funk is another wrestler who fought well past his time.
Funk and Flair were great at their own style’s of wrestling but they went on way too long. If Ric Flair does come back as a full-time personality for the WWE, I hope it is just in a manager role and he doesn’t step inside the ring for a match.

The fans love to see the old timers for nostalgia reasons but when our favourite superstars can’t perform to the level we want to see, it doesn’t do anything positive to the credibility of the wrestlers.

Hulk Hogan would once come out and ‘Hulk up’ after a big beat-down and overcome all the odds and the crowds loved it. However, I could never take a 61 year old man serious if he started hulking up after taking a beating from someone like John Cena.

Hogan and Flair have something in common – they are now just attractions and that is all.

We love to hear Real American and Hogan come out and say ‘Well let me tell you something brother’ and we all love to see Flair come out and go ‘Wooo’ simply because we have fond memories of them doing it in their prime.

That’s when they could have a 20 minute or longer match and have the fans on the edge of their seats. Hulk Hogan has never been great in the ring, especially not compared to Ric Flair, but he had the charisma to get him through his matches and keep the fans excited.

Personally, I don’t want to see Hulk Hogan wrestle John Cena. When I read that’s who he wants to have his last match with, I just pictured the worst wrestling match of all time. Cena has never been great in the ring but he can have some excellent matches when he is facing the right opponent. I just can’t see him being able to carry Hulk Hogan to having a great last match.

Hogan should stick with being an ambassador for the company and only make sporadic appearances on RAW and PPV’s. He is the biggest attraction in the wrestling business right now simply because of his name and using him as an attraction works for the WWE.

If Hogan does get his last match inside a WWE ring with John Cena, I at least hope there would be a special stipulation to allow him to use objects otherwise we will be seeing a 61 year old man try to step back in time which could be a sorry sight.
