“The Divas Revolution” Long Overdue

This past week has been an exciting time for the Divas division in the WWE. Network subscribers have known for quite a while now what casual fans are just now learning…. The NXT women’s division has been home to the best female wrestlers in the business for the past year. Now, they have the stage to prove it and, given the opportunity, they will literally change everything you thought you knew about the Divas division on the main roster.

For a long time the Divas have been an afterthought. They’ve been treated like and portrayed as sex symbols and eye candy for the male fans, used in short “cool-down” segments where fans usually choose to run to the concession stand or take restroom breaks, and given catty storylines that usually resulted in matches consisting of slapping and hair pulling.

The best workers didn’t have the look that WWE was looking for, and the best lookers didn’t have the skills to entertain the fans. The in-ring veterans like Natalya and Alicia Fox were often underutilized and overlooked while the Bellas, who in all fairness have improved lately, were getting the prime TV spots largely on account of their looks.

Meanwhile, during that same time, the women of NXT, the “developmental” branch of the WWE, have been putting in work, honing their craft, and quickly becoming outstanding performers. Week after week they’ve delivered in and out of the ring. The focus has been on their quality ring work and not their attractiveness. When the NXT women step in the ring, fans don’t leave their seats. They’ve been “must-watch” television and often times outperform the men.

Now, three of those ladies have been called up to “the big leagues”, making their presence felt immediately. At Battleground, Charlotte, Sasha Banks and Brie Bella competed in a triple threat match, and that was where you could truly see the difference in talent levels between the NXT girls and the main roster Divas.

Brie Bella, an experienced main roster Diva, looked completely out of her league against the main roster “rookies”.
Charlotte, daughter of the legendary ‘Nature Boy’, Ric Flair, may not possess the natural charisma that her old man has, but she’s super athletic and has an impressive move-set.

“The Boss” Sasha Banks gets better and better with each performance. Her attitude and persona, combined with her in-ring story telling and abilities, easily makes her one of the hottest female wrestlers in the business right now.
Brie on the other hand has been on the main roster for several years, and other than a few drop kicks, a few knees, and yelling “BRIE MODE!!” really loud, doesn’t offer much to the fans when it comes to athletic ability, or entertainment in general.

Women’s wrestling is definitely picking up in the WWE, and we could very well be witnessing a changing of the guards. Stephanie McMahon, along with the women of NXT, have sent a clear message to the Divas division…. “Step your game up, or get out of the way.”

The NXT divas are taking over.
