EWW: Survival of the Sickest Review

After sitting in the shadows of the SLTD writing team for the past few months, I thought it was about time I stepped out of the shadows and brought you a review on a small – yet rapidly growing – British wrestling show I went to see back in May from the Extreme World Wrestling promotion in Hastings.

To build towards Survival of the Sickest, which you can buy here, the EWW team created a promotional video that the bigger, and more well-known, companies of British and American wrestling would have been proud of. Have a look for yourselves and see just how well put together it is.

Survival of the Sickest was a complete sell-out with over 1,000 fans attending the show to see who would prevail as overall winners of the ongoing battle between Team Extreme and Death Row.

The card was stacked to the brim with top-class clashes, ending with an all-out Survival Elimination Match. Here’s a rundown of what I saw:

EWW World Heavyweight Championship: The Rage (c) vs Stockwell

Women’s Tag-Team Match: Skarlett & Erin Angel vs Women’s Champion Destiny (c) & Sammi Baines

A.W.O.L vs “The LadyKiller” Phillip Bateman

EWW Academy Match for the  St. Georges Championship: Drake vs Jay Lamrod vs Deadly Nightshade vs Blitzkrieg vs Alfie Essex vs Rue Blackstar vs SINders

“The Revolution” Titan K vs “The British Beast” Dominator

Infinity vs “Mr Massive” Chuck Cyrus

Elimination Survival Match: Team Extreme vs Death Row

Let’s get down to the action.

EWW World Heavyweight Championship Match: The Rage (c) vs Stockwell

EWW Stockwell v RageAt “Hell Is Where The Heart Is”, Stockwell cashed in his title shot to win the EWW World Championship.

However, at “Invasion of the Bodyslammers 3”, The Rage won the title in a match between Death Row which saw Rage and Dominator face off against Joey Osbourne and Titan K. Stockwell was due to be in the match, but was stripped of the title because he couldn’t make the show.

This was a huge way to kick off Survival of the Sickest and for the first time in EWW history, the Heavyweight Championship match opened the show.

The Rage dominated the match, working Stockwell’s knee and leg to weaken the challenger, but after missing a top-rope moonsault, Stockwell saw the opening and rolled up Rage out of nowhere for the 3 and the win.

Winner (via pinfall and NEW EWW World Heavyweight Champion): Stockwell

Women’s Tag-Team Match: Skarlett & Erin Angel vs Women’s Champion Destiny (c) & Sammi Baines

EWW womens matchAfter Destiny ended Skarlett’s 3-year reign with the Women’s Championship at Invasion of the Bodyslammers 3, the gloves were certain to come off in this match.

Destiny and Baines dominated Erin Angel for the majority of the match until Angel made the tag to Skarlett. Destiny then left the ring, signalling that she didn’t want any part of the “Queen of Extreme”, thus leaving Baines to Skarlett’s mercy, allowing the “Queen of Extreme” to lock in Skarlett’s Web on Baines to get the win.

After the match, Skarlett challenged Destiny to a rematch for the EWW Women’s Championship at Invasion of the Bodyslammers 4 in October, but under Lumberjack rules, which means Destiny can not escape.

Winners (via submission): Skarlett & Erin Angel

A.W.O.L vs “The Lady Killer” Phillip Bateman

EWW AWOL v Phillip BatemanBefore the match had even started, the war of words had begun in promotional videos, but at the start of the match, “The Ladykiller” wished AWOL’s wife and child a Happy Birthday, because they wouldn’t be seeing him after the match.

This fired AWOL up and the match was off to a fast pace. “The Ladykiller” had the best of it and he picked up the 3-count. After the match, “The Ladykiller” was about to unleash more punishment on the Team Extreme soldier, only for the returning Kraft to make the save.

Winner (via pinfall): “The Ladykiller” Phillip Bateman

Extreme Academy Match for the St. George’s Championship: Drake vs Jay Lamrod vs Deadly Nightshade vs Rue Blackstar vs Blitzkrieg vs Alfie Essex vs SINders

EWW academy title matchThis match saw the Extreme Academy competing in a tornado match for the returning St. George’s Championship, with regular Academy competitors joined by two new faces in the form of Rue Blackstar, Blitzkreig and SINders.

Leading up to the match, SINders had a message for the academy competitors – “the monster hiding in the darkness was coming, and no-one will be there to protect you”.

Rue Blackstar was over with the crowd and made an excellent debut in EWW, showing the fans what he’s all about. Blitzkrieg was a force to be reckoned with, and I’m looking forward to seeing these two again in future.

This was a fantastic match from the Extreme Academy. Drake and Lamrod saw off the other competitors, and it would be one of those men who would walk away champion. Drake eventually got the better of Lamrod and picked up the victory.

Drake celebrated his victory with the fans at ringside, along with Skarlett and his new Championship.

Winner (and NEW St. George’s Champion): Drake

Team Extreme’s “The Revolution” Titan K vs  Death Row’s “The British Beast” Dominator

EWW Dominator v TitanIn a hotly-anticipated match, the Dominator was accompanied to the ring by Destiny. Titan wasted no time in getting to the ring and as the two big men of the EWW roster got ready to collide, you could feel the electricity in the air.

Dominator set out to prove why he is the dominant force in EWW and had the better of Titan, especially with the chest chops, each one more punishing than the last, sending a shiver down the spine of the fans in attendance and anyone else in close proximity.

The Dominator needed a little help – in the form of Destiny, Jynx (who appeared when the lights went out) and a steel chair – to get Titan off his feet. The steel chair shot that took “The Revolution” down rocked the arena, as well as most of Hastings! Dominator didn’t hold anything back with the chair shot that caused him to lose by disqualification.

Winner (via DQ): “The Revolution” Titan K

Infinity vs “Mister Massive” Chuck Cyrus

EWW infinity V Chuck CyrusThis was a great match to have before the main-event. “Mister Massive” made his presence known from the minute he appeared, oozing arrogance. With that being said though, it’s clear that he can back up his arrogance. Infinity showed that he has a bright future ahead of him and why he’s one to look out for on the British wrestling circuit.

In a match full of action and some risky outside dives, Infinity proved Chuck Cyrus’ gloating wrong and picked up the victory over “Mister Massive”.

Winner (via pinfall): Infinity

Elimination Survival Match: Team Extreme (A.W.O.L, Stockwell, Skarlett, Titan & Drake) vs Death Row (Phillip Bateman, Rage, Dominator, Jynx & Exodus)

EWW Survival matchThe main event of the evening was a spectacle not to be missed. After the way the feud has rolled on between these two teams, it was about to reach its peak, and change the landscape of EWW.

This was a 5-on-5 elimination match where the competitors could be eliminated by pinfall, submission or count-out. Normal tag-team rules applied. As soon as someone is eliminated, another member of their team enters the match.

After the events of their match earlier in the evening, Titan and Dominator collided again. They fought all the way to the back and were counted out.

Eliminated: Team Extreme’s Titan & Death Row’s Dominator

The action continued and Death Row got the upper hand by eliminating both Drake and AWOL, leaving just Skarlett and Stockwell to defend the honour of Team Extreme.

Eliminated: Team Extreme’s Drake & AWOL

Death Row were still 4 members strong as Stockwell entered the ring to face off against Death Row. It resulted in his elimination, leaving Skarlett to stand alone and take on Death Row single-handed.

Eliminated: Team Extreme’s Stockwell

“The Bombshell from Hell” stepped in the ring and was holding her own against Death Row until the numbers game caught up with her and she ended up on the end of a Death Row beating, resulting in her elimination after a punishing beat-down, leaving Death Row as the Survivors of the Sickest.

Eliminated: Team Extreme’s Skarlett

Winners: Death Row

Death Row’s leader, Dominator, made his way back out to celebrate with his team, and to make a sacrifice of Skarlett. Or so it seemed…until “The British Beast” turned on his team and cleaned house!

The roof just about blew off the place when Dominator turned on his Death Row team-mates! After all the mind-games and fighting had finished, he reunited with Skarlett and the 1,000 EWW fans let out a deafening cheer to end the show.

My Overall Thoughts on Survival of the Sickest

Once again, it was another impressive show from the EWW team. I’d like to extend my congratulations to them for selling out yet another show and for creating various promotional videos for the show that ANY wrestling company in the industry would be proud of.

EWW is leading by example, showing that you don’t have to be a global, dominant company to put on an extremely enjoyable show with high quality matches. Having a roster that puts their all into each show makes sure that the fans leave happy and wanting more.

I thought the show flowed really well and each match on the card upped the ante for those that followed. The atmosphere created by the 1,000 fans in attendance made it sound like there were more than that in the building.

The Extreme Academy showed they’re the future stars of the company, as well as ones to watch on the British wrestling circuit. The women of EWW also proved that they’re able to take it to the extreme and put on an entertaining match, raising the stakes ahead of Invasion of the Bodyslammers 4 in October, where the title will be on the line in a Lumberjack match. You don’t see that often in women’s wrestling!

I recommend you check these guys out as they’re getting bigger and better with every show. You can find out information on when and where their shows are by going to the official EWW website. You can also buy tickets, DVDs and other merchandise there too! Follow them on Twitter and like their official Facebook page.
