Fantasy Fight Friday – Neville vs. Rey Mysterio

Hello, everyone, and welcome to another edition of ‘Fantasy Fight Friday’, SLTD Wrestling’s one stop shop for professional wrestling’s most intriguing dream matches. Don’t worry if you didn’t get a chance to vote for a winner over the last couple of weeks, you can still do so right now! Those polls won’t be closing any time soon.

This week we’ve gone for somewhat of a different flavour, pitting two of the industry’s most gifted high-fliers against each other in a match that would surely be one of wrestling’s most exciting cruiserweight bouts in history.

In one corner, you have Rey Mysterio, the biggest little man to step inside the squared circle. He’s one of the most popular WWE Superstars ever, particularly with the younger members of the audience, for being the underdog in almost every one of his matches. His size, speed, agility and never-say-die attitude brought him tremendous success in the ring, earning him a number of impressive title wins, most notably the World Heavyweight Championship, which he won in Eddie Guerrero’s honour at WrestleMania 22.

He is the master of the 619, one of WWE’s most recognisable finishing manoeuvres ever, and he is a shoe-in for a future induction into the Hall of Fame, as perhaps one of the greatest aerial performers to ever grace the canvas.

In the other corner, you have Neville, easily the most awe-inspiring high-flyer in the WWE today, with one of the most appropriate monikers in company history as “the man that gravity forgot”. As the longest-reigning NXT Champion, helping to establish the brand as one of the most entertaining in all of professional wrestling with his unbelievable work in 2014, he is a testament to the amount of talent that WWE’s developmental brand can export to the main roster.

He has taken the likes of John Cena, Dolph Ziggler, Sheamus and Seth Rollins to their limits in his short time on Raw and Smackdown, and many of his fans consider him a worthy contender for the Intercontinental Championship, despite his brief main roster run thus far.

This would indeed be a fast-paced match with some unbelievable spots, from Neville’s death-defying Red Arrow and 450- Splash to Rey Mysterio’s 619 and springboard assaults. A battle between the best that cruiserweight wrestling has to offer in WWE today, versus arguably the best it ever had to offer. So who would win?

Author of ‘Under the Spotlight’ for SLTD, Adam O’Brien gives his take on the match below:

“This match may not be the most sought-after dream match of all time, but it is a damn interesting one, and a tough one to call at that. All I know for sure is that if Rey Mysterio ever does happen to return to WWE for one last run, the very first man I want him to face is ‘The Jumping Geordie’ himself.

As for an inevitable victor in this undoubtedly extraordinary match-up, I think I may have to go with ‘The New Sensation’ on this one. Don’t get me wrong, I love Rey Mysterio, in fact growing up as a wrestling fan, Mysterio was definitely one of my favourites. I still have the mask to prove it.

In saying that, however, whoever wins this match will have to pull off something spectacular to up the ante against his opponent. And while the 619 may be an iconic finishing move, I just don’t think it would hold water against some of the moves that Neville can pull out of the hat at a moment’s notice, a reverse 450 or a second-rope Phoenix Splash to name just a few. It’s this incredible ability to improvise and change his style in an instant that would provide Neville the edge in this one.”

So there you have it, folks! Now the question to ask is this; who do you think would win in a match between ‘the man that gravity forgot’, Neville and ‘the ultimate underdog’, Rey Mysterio? Leave your vote below to declare a winner, and make sure to comment on why you chose who you did!
