Pushing the Panic Button

With less than a week to go until WrestleMania 30, I thought I’d focus my attention, and give my thoughts, on the WWE World Heavyweight Championship match. Unlikely to be the most eagerly anticipated match on this year’s card amongst the fans, it is however, more than likely to be the final match of the PPV.

In all honesty, I can understand the fans’ frustration with this match. After all, Batista’s return to the WWE has not proved as popular as I think many behind the scenes at the WWE had hoped for. In fact, of all the people who have returned after a long period of absence, Batista has potentially received the most heat from WWE fans. But why?

Batista seemed to leave the WWE on good terms and without a particularly big media frenzy, he didn’t like the direction the company was going, so he got out whilst he could. Fair play to the man right?

I guess I could have sympathy with him for that, but it’s the ease with which he was brought back into the main-event fold – winning the Royal Rumble – whilst guys like CM Punk and Daniel Bryan were conveniently shoved to one side. Even Roman Reigns has a legitimate right to feel aggrieved at not being in the main-event at the Showcase of the Immortals after his performance at the Royal Rumble.

In my opinion, WWE have dropped the ball on their proposed main-event and upon realising that, they’ve now pushed the panic button by booking a triple-threat match instead. There were widespread calls online for fans to boycott the Orton/Batista match. Can you imagine how embarrassed WWE would be if their own fans turned their back on the WrestleMania main-event?

Again I have some sympathy for them though. This year’s WrestleMania is particularly special because it’s 30 years old and surely it deserves a main-event that’s great in stature. Quite frankly, Orton versus Batista doesn’t fit the bill. It doesn’t even come close. Once again, the stand-out match looks to be the return of The Undertaker going up against Brock Lesnar, with the Streak on the line.

I feel that the powers-that-be have finally picked up on the sense of disappointment amongst the fans, and the decision to add the winner of the Triple H/Bryan match has been made to try to salvage the main-event and restore some credibility to the title.

That being said, we’re left with two possible outcomes.

The first is that the WWE will have Batista win the title – a move which would be unpopular, but which would adhere to their original plan for the main-event. The conversion of the match to a triple-threat was merely a ploy to keep bums on seats in the stadium.

The second possible outcome, I believe, is a win for Daniel Bryan – sending the New Orleans crowd into a frenzy and showing that fan power really does count for something.

I don’t see Orton winning at WrestleMania 30 and, as for Triple H, I can’t envisage him returning to a competitive schedule where he competes on a regular basis, defending the title.

Whatever the outcome, I’m eagerly anticipating WrestleMania 30 this weekend and I’m quietly optimistic about CM Punk interfering during the main-event…
