Aha it’s me Alan Partridge no not really it’s The Wrestling Brain, so I have been looking back at previous articles in my short career as a contributor on SLTD Wrestling and I have mainly focused on individual competitors, however today I will discuss the current state of the WWE Tag Team division
But first let’s take a trip back to memory lane to remind ourselves of how good the Tag division was and has been. At the start of Millennium. there were 3 top tag teams they were The Dudley Boys,The Hardy Boyz and Edge and Christian,those 3 teams met two absolute TLC classics,seriously I watched them on the WWE Network for the first ever time and they were brilliant, all three teams revolutionised the tag division,in all different forms,The Hardy’s were great with ladders,the Dudley’s with tables and Edge and Christian with chairs,it is arguable that the matches that those three teams had are the.best Tag matches ever in WWE history.
During the ruthless era,The Hardy’s made sporadic appearances as a Tag team, The Dudley’s were gone as were Edge and Christian, so it was a new era for Tag teams, MNM,the reunion of DX,Lance Cade and Trevor Murdoch, Deuce N Domino were all Tag teams in the Ruthless era,but one Tag team doesn’t get the recognition they deserve.
They were WWE Tag team Champions for a record 331 days,they defeated the team of MNM at Judgement Day 2006,ironically enough one of there early challengers featured Damien Sandow (Idol Stevens). They defended there Tag titles in an epic Fatal 4 Way Ladder Tag titles match at Armageddon 2006 there opponents that day were MNM,the newly reformed Hardy Boyz and the all British pairing of William Regal and Dave Taylor, however for some unknown reason they didn’t feature on the Wrestlemania 23 card,they eventually dropped their titles to Deuce N Domino on an episode of Smackdown,if you don’t know which team I’m talking well,I will tell you right now… Brian Kendrick and Paul London,in my eyes they were the future of the Tag team division and also had the potential to be very much like The Hardy Boyz,whenever anyone brings up great tag teams DX,Hardy Boyz, Edge and Christian,Dudley Boyz, Evolution,The Shield and NWO etc,but London and Kendrick are never mentioned in my eyes it’s a true shame,anyone with the Network re-watch their match at Armageddon 2006 then you’ll see why they were a great Tag team.
However in recent years very few Tag teams have lit up WWE,failed singles stars have got together to form a Tag team which last awhile but are unlikely memorable, of course apart from Cesaro and Kidd, however there are Tag teams now who will either split up and get together again much like Prime Time Players,but I doubt these Tag teams will go down as Hall of Famers,I mean imagine in 20 years time at Wrestlemania 52, the first inductees to the Hall of Fame class of 2036 is… Los Matadoras or The Ascension,so what can WWE do about it,
Make the Tag titles relatable again : Okay here me out a bit here, there have a been a few good Tag matches this year,but for certain the serious injury to Tyson Kidd has damaged the Tag division,yes Cesaro wouldn’t of received the singles push that’s earned,but Kidd and Cesaro were a great Tag team,I highly doubt they will team up again,maybe due to Kidd’s injuries or because of Cesaro’s singles career on a high.
So how about when The Uso’s return they should bring back the extreme side of Tag team,recreate the classic TLC matches,against Lucha Dragons and maybe New Day and even Los Matadores. I completely agree that The New Day are fantastic at what there doing every week,but I doubt they will get into the Hall of Fame for what there doing at the moment so if they have a good matches,the crowd may get behind them more,considering The Hardy Boyz,Edge and Christian and Dudley Boys were relatively unknown until they had those TLC matches and then they were born. Edge went onto being a WWE Champion,as did Jeff Hardy, The Dudley’s were successful in TNA,so are The Hardy’s. Now yes they sacrificed they body night after night to entertain the WWE Universe, but it will make them all one day become Hall of Famers,because of those matches. Yes this is the PG Era,but TLC matches still happen,bumps happen,so please WWE bring the fearful death deifying Tag matches back,the crowd will invest again in the tag division, the titles will be relatable again.
