Road to Wrestler – My Legacy

What Happened?

Long story short SLTD Wrestling Fans, your boy did not graduate from the PROJO’s beginners course.

The day of the exam came, I was obviously very nervous, as one is nervous any exam, however, I do not blame the nerves for my not passing.

The PROJO exam wasn’t this big scary assessment that makes individuals quake in their boots. If you’ve seen WWE performance centre try-outs, it’s somewhat like those.

We had to run through drills as we usually do in training, but this time how well we performed the drills was under even more scrutiny than usual. Drills included the fundamentals of rolls and breaks, as well as going through some of the other things we had learnt such as running the ropes. (Which as I’ve said before, hurts like hell).

However, there was one thing that we had to do for the exam that was ‘different’ to what we usually do in training. At the end of each persons ‘demonstration,’ we had to put on a one minute match. This doesn’t sound too hard, most of our favourite matches are between 20 to 40 minutes. However, as beginners, this is pretty hard especially with the head coaches watching.

My minute match consisted mainly of chain wrestling and some running of the ropes. They weren’t looking for anything particularly fancy, just good technique, which in my opinion I gave them.

So why didn’t I graduate?

I wish I could say I have no clue, but that would be lying. In my opinion, the main reason for my not graduating is two-fold. The clear one was that my fitness was in no way up to scratch. A few minutes into the exam I was already panting heavily and struggling. This was obvious to those watching and as I was told in my first session, ‘No heel wants to put over a babyface who gets blown up in the first five minutes.’

Secondly, I personally felt I wasn’t ‘strong enough’. This may have been physically and mentally, but even very early on in my training, I could tell my lock-up’s etc. Weren’t as strong as they could have been. This may have been simply because the other guys were much stronger than me, but I feel I also was lacking that gumption to get really fired up.

What’s next?

As mentioned in a previous article this is not the end. I may have fallen over at this hurdle, but I’ll be back on my feet and running (both literally and metaphorically) faster than ever before. I’ve got a terrible back pain for the past four or five months I need to address (yes I’m lazy). I’ve also got some personal matters to tend to, but once my mind and body are clear, Monster Match Sully is going to be back in that ring.

Much like The Undertaker, ‘Failing at the PROJO will no longer be my legacy’.
