Team SLTD: Favourite Money in The Bank Match

Hey Folks, Its PPV time once again, and in honour of arguably one of the most exciting PPV’s of the year Money in the Bank Team SLTD have all got together to tell you their favourite Money in the Bank Matches.

We share ours below, But what are your? Let us know in the comments below.

@ALFarrand (PPV Rewind)

Wrestlemania 25 – More of a personal choice for me as it opened the first ever Wrestlemania I was able to go to live but it was also the coronation of CM Punk as the only two time MITB winner, the Wrestlemania return of Christian and a fantastic senton off a ladder from MITB MVP Shelton Benjamin. Fast paced, heightened drama and a genuine not knowing who is going to win.

My favourite Money In The Bank, has to be the first one held at Wrestlemania 21, because it was something that no-one had seen before, sure we’d seen ladder matches in the past but this was the first ever  Money In The Bank match. The 6 guys Kane, Benoit, Jericho, Benjamin, Edge and Christian all delivered numerous high risk spots, my personal favourite has to be Benjamin hitting a T – Bone suplex onto Edge off the top of the ladder.

Finally a main reason why this is my favourite MITB match is because it made a star in Edge. Sure he had big matches in the past but I believe this was his biggest match because it made him a legitimate singles star and more importantly a main eventer, surely that’s what the money in the bank contract is supposed to do. To take a mid carder to a main event level, this match was the beginning of the ultimate opportunist and birth of the Rated R Superstar and one of the biggest stars in the last decade.

It’s tough to choose a favourite out of eleven years’ worth of Money in the Bank ladder matches, but after several days of consideration I’ve landed on 2013’s all-star edition of the match, with an opportunity at the WWE Championship literally hanging in the balance.

Six huge names in Randy Orton, Sheamus, Daniel Bryan, Christian, CM Punk and the returning Rob Van Dam squared off, with each man having an equal stake at the briefcase. It may not be the most celebrated iteration of the Money in the Bank ladder match, but the excitement, unpredictability and star power involved made it one to remember for sure.

From RVD’s re-emergence on WWE television, the establishment of a feud between CM Punk and his mentor Paul Heyman, and the continued popularity of Daniel Bryan before he received his break at the following SummerSlam Pay-Per-View, this match did well to set the tone for the rest of the year, and provide us all with some extraordinary competition in the meantime.

@WWETOWNnation (The Fox Files)

My favourite Money In The Bank Match has to be 2011, not only the best MITB PPV was 2011, but solely the 2 Money matches themselves were amazing. Also, the underdogs won as Daniel Bryan won the Smackdown match and Del Rio won the RAW MITB. The matches were very well booked and that is my favourite match. Let’s hope we get better at the 2016 PPV!

@WresleKicks (Wrestle Kicks)

The money in the bank ladder match has been my favourite match types since it first debuted at WrestleMania 21. The stakes at hand made it of equal importance to the famed Royal Rumble match, which is my 2nd favourite type of match if you were wondering.

The best MITB match that I have ever witnessed took place at WrestleMania 24 and jumpstarted CM Punks career to new heights. A match that really showcased wrestlers that WWE thought at the time would be the major stars in the near future with talent’s like Shelton Benjamin, John Morrison and Mr Kennedy really showing how good they could be. The only star in that match that had won a world title before going into the match was Jericho (not including the ECW championship) and this meant it was all but a certainty that we would be seeing someone new at the top of the company very soon. That man turned out be CM Punk when he managed to unhook the briefcase with Jericho hanging from the ladder by a single leg not being able to do anything about it. This image has become very iconic when thinking about MITB in general and with a ridiculous spot from Benjamin and a memorable performance by Morrison, on this night we got the best money in the bank match of all time.

@ColinHebert614 (The Certain Jerker)

2012 for the World Heavyweight Championship contract.  This match was pretty much an afterthought to fans, as we also had a WWE Championship contract “Money In The Bank” match that featured only former WWE champions and a WWE Championship match between C.M. Punk and Daniel Bryan that was an instant classic, but this is my favourite for personal reasons.

Dolph Ziggler was the winner of that match and him and myself grew up in the same part of the world in north-eastern Ohio in the United States.  Sure, The Miz had won a “Money In The Bank” match and a WWE title, but Dolph has always been “our guy” in Ohio.  The field wasn’t much, Tyson Kidd, Sin Cara, Tensai, Christian, but it didn’t matter.  It felt like the home team had won and was going to go on to win the championship.  He cashed in the contract on Alberto Del Rio the night after WrestleMania 29 and my friends and I celebrated that night too.

@TomRobinson5199 (Armbar Analysis)

It’s very hard to decide between two particular matches that were never even featured on a Money In The Bank pay-per-view. They were two of the early birds of MITB matches, as they both took place at WrestleMania. WrestleMania 21 saw the start of Edge’s ascension to the top as he, Chris Benoit, Shelton Benjamin, Christian, Kane and Chris Jericho all did battle in the first ever Money In The Bank match.

On the other hand, WrestleMania 23 saw a Money In The Bank match that I’ll never forget. Eight great workers from RAW, SmackDown! and ECW battled for the briefcase, with the option to challenge for any of the three world titles at any time if they won. Everyone was able to get involved in the big spots, as Randy Orton went on an RKO frenzy while even Hornswoggle was also a victim of the conflict. In the end, Mr Kennedy claimed victory. As much as I loved the spots featuring Shelton Benjamin in the first match, I’ve got to declared the WrestleMania 23 match as the greatest of all. This was how you do one of these matches with eight men and everyone worked their arses of at WrestleMania 23.

@Tybo_SLTD (Tybo Talks)

My personal favourite the first one at Wrestlemania 21. Now this may not be everyone’s favourite match, But as a completely new concept this was amazing.

It is now common place in almost every wrestling promotion from TNA to your local wrestling show, the idea of a ladder match that the winner gets a contract to compete for the heavyweight title of that company but it all started with WWE’s Money in the Bank Ladder Match. This was Chris Jericho’s original idea, and what an idea it was. The fact that twenty-one years after the original Wrestlemania WWE are coming up with new and innovative ideas is great.

As a match, it was pretty amazing. Shelton Benjamin stole the show as he always did in Ladder Matches with running up the side of a ladder to clothesline Jericho off another ladder was insane to see as the time. And let’s not forget this was the start of the massive push that Edge got to become one of the most decorated in WWE, if there was no Money in the Bank ladder match and no cash-in’s (which are now so common) would half of the former WWE or World Heavyweight Champions be the main eventers they are or were?

So there are Team SLTD’s favourite Money in the Bank Matches, but what are yours? Let us know below!

Team SLTD will be back tomorrow sharing who we think will win this years Money in the Bank match.
