The Voice of Reason: Why Kane v Rollins?

After an eventful Night of Champions PPV, where Seth Rollins successfully regained the WWE World Heavyweight Championship, and also managed to dodge a Sheamus cash-in, we are back in full swing for WWE programming.
This is usually the time of year where WWE ratings are fairly low, before picking up again around the Royal Rumble. So what is the answer to this? By throwing Rollins in a feud with Kane. Kane has been the one constant in WWE, and by that I mean he is always there, and is a great worker. In recent times we have seen him as the Corporate version, wearing business gear while wrestling. Not the best of gimmicks, but he pulls it off well.
Thus the inevitable happened at Night of Champions, where the demon finally returned. Now I am a fan of masked Kane, especially more than Corporate Kane. As JR used to say, business has picked up, and it certainly does when Kane’s fire explosion hits.
Now although I am a Kane fan, I am not sure he is the answer to WWE’s current rating problems. A feud between him and Seth Rollins has been a long time coming, but how long will it even last? Will we really look back in 5 years and say Kane’s feud with Rollins was really the best? No.
This really does feel like an interim feud to give Seth Rollins a big bad monster to fend off before going against a more likely candidate to take his WWE World Heavyweight Title. While the way Kane faked his Corporate return on Monday Night Raw was entertaining and perfectly executed, it’s not a new match or feud. Just sticking a mask on Kane does not make it different.
Don’t get me wrong, the match will be solid and have some great spots as they always do when these two men are involved. But just once I wish the WWE went all out to make these “interim” matches truly worthwhile.
A match I would love to see is Kevin Owens against Seth Rollins. Although this is technically a Heel v Heel match, Rollins will basically go up against another kind of young punk who thinks he’s better than everyone else. Yeah Kevin Owens may not walk away with the title, but the point is to create memorable feuds that stay with us forever.
The sad part is that Kane probably does deserve more title runs that he has had. Even sadder is that after this entire feud, I wouldn’t be surprised if Corporate Kane was back with us within a few months actually helping Seth Rollins.
That’s all from me this week. Stay tuned to SLTD for great insights and views.
