WWMD – WWE Universe Shakeup 2017

Welcome back to WWMD! Firstly, before we get underway with our merriment and mayhem of looking at the pro-wrestling world, I’d like to apologise. Life has been certainly interesting for me, hence delays in posting. However, all is right with the world and WWMD is back, alive and kicking. So today we look at What Matt Would Do to shake things up a little in WWE-land.

Bring back a 24/7 Rules Title

The WWF Hardcore Championship was a title like no other. Not only was it contested in hardcore matches, it was defended 24/7. That meant it could be contested anywhere – in the ring, backstage, in a car park, a theme park. You name it, it could be defended there. The reason I loved that title so much is that it was unpredictable. Anything could happen, at any time. Unpredictability makes things interesting, makes people watch and tune in.  In the age of house show attendance being hit by not seeing main event wrestlers, this could help. Imagine going to a house show and knowing there was a legit chance of a title change. Imagine going knowing that something might happen.

Use talk shows during Raw/SmackDown / WWE Network

We’ve had shows in the past help get over feuds. We’ve had shows in the past to help make wrestlers. Pipers Pit, Miz TV, The Cutting Edge, King’s Court to name a few. Wrestlers need time to develop characters, time to make the crowd interested in them, time for them to be loved (or hated). Look at the wrestlers on 205 Live. How much time do they really get? On the mic? In a pre-record segment, or interview back stage? The majority of development for them gets squeezed into Raw. This means that fans can’t get involved with them and then they suffer as a result.  With the WWE Network, timing isn’t an issue. Entire series of interviews could be recorded and steamed online. This then allows plenty of time of fans to get involved with wrestlers.

Use the past to help scope out the future

I’m pretty sure soon we’ll see Roman Reigns tag with Seth Rollins. At some point we’ll see Braun Strowman tag with Kalisto. The reason why – WWE Creative don’t allow for timelines. When Triple H and Stone Cold united it was a major shock – two wrestlers who had never been on the same page. Two wrestlers who hated each other. However, this happens all too often. Wrestlers who fought in matches and feuds only a month later tag teaming together. There is no logic, sound reasoning or thought process in some areas at this needs to stop. In the day of the internet and social media, kayfabe is dead. Back in the day, companies would fine/fire heels and faces who would hang out together, even if they were family or friends. However, some planning could help sort out the logic and ensure there is some form of logic to shows.

Closing thoughts

The landscape of WWE is rapidly changing, however you measure it. Wrestlers get pushed and pulled, events get promoted then forgotten about.  Who knows what the long term plan is. Who knows what Vince (or Triple H?) has planned. All we can do is wait and see…
