Davie’s Dungeon: Celebrities On Raw… No Thanks!

Welcome to the dungeon!

Next week on RAW, Jerry Springer is returning once again to add a bit of drama to the show. The WWE always seems to find any excuse to have a celebrity on the show to gain some media attention, all I think though, is this really going to do anything at all to increase the ratings?

Jerry Springer is still a popular celebrity but he’s not going to get the younger audience to tune in by his appearance and I don’t think many older fans would tune into RAW for three hours just to see his segment.

Springer used to be really popular during the 90’s especially when the WWE was at it’s height during the Attitude Era but he was never on then (or not that I can remember). Because of his history with his chat show, the WWE does have a decent excuse to bring him in for RAW but now that the WWE is PG, I can see it being another waste of a segment. The storyline could benefit much more without the appearance of Jerry Springer and a pathetic, watered down version of his show.

Sometimes the WWE goes too far just trying to get ratings and a bit of attention from the media by bringing in a celebrity. I hated it when they had a celebrity running the show every week, it’s taking time away from the talent that deserve it. I wouldn’t mind if they managed to get A-list celebrities who could contribute something worthwhile to a storyline but most of the time we have to sit through cringeworthy segments that go on way too long.

I have tried to think of any celebrity that could help increase the RAW ratings and I can’t think of any at all. As a wrestling fan, I would rather watch a 20 minute technical battle with two hard-working superstars than have a celebrity waste time by trying to be funny. It’s even worse when it’s obvious a celebrity doesn’t know who any of the wrestlers are.

It’s pretty simple for the WWE to increase ratings, all they have to do is tell better stories with a great match as a big pay-off, create exciting superstars with believable gimmicks and promote the hell out of them. They need to create moments that people will talk about otherwise the fans (like me) will get bored of the product.

We don’t need celebrities on RAW, we don’t need singers using the WWE to promote their new songs, all we need is exciting wrestling. The amount of time the WWE has wasted bringing in celebrities over the years is ridiculous when they could have given the time to deserving superstars.

I watch RAW for wrestling, not for celebrities. It was exciting at first but it’s gone too far now, leave the celebrities in Hollywood and just give us wrestling WWE!
