#KWKorner: #AEW and #Impact alliance could be THE game changer wrestling needs (@thekantastic)

Well, they said it would be the biggest AEW Dynamite ever…they weren’t kidding.

Last night featured not only the return of the legendary Sting to TNT for the first time in some 19 years after WCW folded in 2001, but saw an incredible world title match and an eyebrow raising ending that literally saw the AEW championship, now around the waist of Kenny Omega, going over to…Impact Wrestling??

As Don Callus, Impact’s EVP, said last night, “See you on Tuesday!”, which caused the Impact Wrestling website to crash for several minutes as fans flocked to figure out how to get AXS TV. For your information, Impact has a Twitch channel and live streams their show every Tuesday at 8 pm.

Even some Impact and AEW talent have taken to social media to dream of fantasy cross promotional matches. Perhaps it wasn’t a coincidence that Impact’s Twitch channel replayed a ladder match between the Young Bucks and Impact’s Motor City Machine Guns recently.

Let’s not forget the Sting debut, who confirmed that he has signed a full time, multi year deal with the upstart promotion. Sting was also a mainstay on Impact (back when it was known as TNA) for many years. The appearance of a legend in wrestling of his stature only serves to further legitimize AEW as a serious player in the wrestling game…not to mention highlighting how WWE dropped the ball on booking the Stinger when the legend debuted on WWE back in 2014-2015.

Getting back to this Impact, AEW ‘alliance’ of sorts…it wasn’t that much unexpected that this would happen. As I previously opined in this piece, Callus has been making appearances on AEW as a guest commentator, and Impact has mentioned AEW on air during Tuesday nights.

Both companies on their own have somewhat been making moves working with other promotions, such as AEW with their current deal with NWA. Impact has sent guys like TJP and Chris Bey to compete in MLW and NJPW tournaments, respectively. But the idea that the two main wrestling companies that are the closest thing to rivaling the mammoth that is WWE can be nothing short of a game changer.

The AEW / Impact strategic alliance may be the opening salvo to upending the entire wrestling industry on its head in the next few years.
