The Three Count – Tables, Ladders & Chairs 2016

Hey guys, I’m Ross and this is the first edition of The Three Count, where I go over 3 points of any particular topic as it relates to the world of Pro Wrestling. For the first edition, I’m going over 3 good and 3 bad moments of Sunday night’s TLC pay-per-view, a show that only had 2 weeks worth of TV hype but certainly delivered a great show.

The Good:-

  1. IC Title Ladder match – I had high hopes for this match going in, and it did not fail to live up in my opinion. To me, the innovative moves by the Miz really won me over here. This wasn’t your usual spotfest of a ladder match, instead it was a much more realistic affair, with The Miz taking out both legs of Ziggler, making it difficult for him to climb the ladder and impossible for him to hit his Superkick. It looked like The Miz had legitimately hurt his knee after falling from the top of the ladder, but this made the finish even more exciting. The Miz topped off his excellent performance with a great promo calling out Daniel Bryan’s unfair treatment on Smackdown. All in all, The Miz has to be a shoe-in for the most improved wrestler of the year.
  2. Chairs match – This is a match that I and many had no real interest in before the show. However, this match was excellent. Kalisto works very well in the David role against any Goliath he’s put in the ring with, and Corbin’s offense looks even more impressive against the smaller guys. It’s not saying much, but this was the best chairs match that I’ve ever seen, and the finishing sequence looked brutal. Following on from Talking Smack, it would appear as though Corbin may be in line for a championship. A lot of people give Corbin stick, but I think he’s come a long way and improved tenfold both in the ring and on the mic, so I hope he gets more of a chance to shine on the blue brand.
  3. Tables, Ladders, Chairs & Ellsworth – An excellent TLC Match between two performers who you’d expect to put on a great match. Styles and Ambrose have been going at it for the better part of the last four months, all the way back to just after the WWE Draft in July. This was set to be a true finale, and it lived up to the hype in every way possible. Breathtaking high spots in this one, topped with a James Ellsworth heel turn that popped the crowd, as he pushed Ambrose from a ladder in the ring through two tables on the outside! On the surface, I am not a huge fan of Ellsworth and comedy so high up the card, but I’m interested to see how Ambrose responds this coming Tuesday on Smackdown Live.

The Bad:-

I really didn’t have much to complain about on this show, as I mentioned above, I thought this show was solid al the way through. Nevertheless, here are 3 points that I wasn’t overly keen on:-

  1. Tables match – I’ll start with this. Don’t get me wrong, I loved the finish and I love the result. The reason this falls under the bad category is that there were a number of blown and sloppy spots leading into the finishing sequence that kind of took me out of the match. There was also a moment where Lynch was audibly calling spots and I personally think Cena is the only person who should be able to get away with that!
  2. Ellsworth’s appearance – While the Chinless one made his presence felt in the main event, I believe that he should not have even been on the show after last Tuesday’s Smackdown. I’m potentially knit picking here, but Ellsworth has been portrayed as a joke throughout his time on SD Live, and he took a Styles Clash from the top of the steel stairs to the floor just 5 days prior. I feel that no one would have been that surprised that he was missing from this show, but I appreciate that his appearance here advanced the storyline within this match and moving forward, as Ellsworth stated on Talking Smack that he will challenge Styles to a match for the WWE Championship this week on Smackdown.
  3. Natalya – I don’t have any problem with Nattie’s in ring work, but there was a huge discrepancy following the Nikki Bella – Carmella match. After Nikki won the match, Carmella announced that she did not attack Bella to keep her out of the Survivor Series match, but it as in-fact her replacement in that match, Natalya. This is fine, and makes sense and Nattie was delighted to take Nikki’s place in the match, but the main problem here lies with what aired straight after this ‘bombshell’ announcement – a Kay Jewellers promo with babyface Natalya helping a fan pick out the perfect engagement ring. A total heat killer for this angle before it even starts.
