Davie’s Dungeon: A Roster For The Future

Welcome to the dungeon!

I’ve read a few comments that John Cena made during his interview with Stone Cold Steve Austin on his podcast. I found it interesting when he said that the WWE are on cusp of having an all-star roster for the first time in a long time. When I first read it I wasn’t so sure, but when I look at the current roster, he has a valid point.

There are many superstars who have the potential to be headliners in the future, but it all depends on how the WWE use them. Many times, we’ve seen a superstar who’s been on the verge of becoming a mainstay on the roster, only to be dropped down the pecking order for various reasons.

Zack Ryder and Dolph Ziggler are prime examples of how quickly a superstar can make a name for themselves, only to slip-up and force management to change their views.

Zack Ryder became a victim of his own success. He managed to do the one thing very few people have been able to do over the last 10 years – get over with the fans without the help of the WWE management.

Ryder was able to gain the interest of fans with his YouTube show and it was a success, until the WWE got their hands on it. He basically forced WWE to give him TV time and it looked like he was going to have a big part to play in the future of the WWE. For whatever reason, it didn’t happen.

Dolph Ziggler was able to become a star due to his incredible in-ring talent. He has a cocky attitude, but he’s able to back it up in the ring and that’s what endeared him to the fans. It’s easy to see that he could be the next Shawn Michaels, or Chris Jericho, or Owen Hart. He simply has ‘it’.

Running his mouth in interviews may be the reason he’s been in the doghouse, but hopefully it won’t last forever. Dolph Ziggler is one of those rare talents who can be called upon to go out and steal the show whenever needed. WWE officials need to push him sooner than later because there are many other superstars waiting to be given the chance to shine.

Antonio Cesaro is one of the superstars who has a legitimate chance of becoming a big player for the WWE. He’s getting more and more fans because of his in-ring ability and he’s got the look that the WWE seem to crave.

The same goes for Roman Reigns. We’re already starting to see the WWE grooming him to become a top star. If done right, he could be pushed into the main-event picture sooner than later. Hopefully the WWE will build him up gradually (like they have been doing) and let the audience become more familiar with him over time, because it’ll give him a better chance of succeeding as a main-event star.

I always see people saying that the WWE has a thin roster, but I don’t believe they do. I think they have a great roster, but they’ve created problems for themselves by not preparing to usher in a new era. John Cena and Randy Orton aren’t going to be able to perform at the level that they currently are for much long, so it’s important that the WWE react to the situation now.

There’s no doubt that Daniel Bryan is the future of the company, but he needs competition. Along with Antonio Cesaro and Roman Reigns, the WWE have Bray Wyatt, Dean Ambrose, Seth Rollins, The Uso’s, Cody Rhodes, Titus O’Neil and Darren Young. Any one of those superstars can become main-event players in the future.

I’ve said before that I don’t see John Cena going away anytime soon, but he won’t always be at the top of his game. We’re close to a new era in the WWE and the tools are there to make it a success. Let’s hope the WWE continues to build to the future instead of relying on the past.
