Davie’s Dungeon: Improving The Wrestlemania Main-Event

Welcome to the dungeon!

I didn’t watch most of Raw this week, so today, I’m going to give you my thoughts on the WrestleMania 30 main-event as it stands now, and how I’d improve it. Forgive me for not watching Raw from start to finish, but you should be happy that I lasted an hour!

Considering we’re now into ‘WrestleMania season’ and the WWE Network is due to launch soon, shouldn’t the WWE be doing everything possible to please the fans instead of pissing everyone off?

I’m not going to repeat everything I said in last week’s column, but I still can’t see Randy Orton versus Batista headlining WrestleMania 30. It’ll be a car crash and no-one is interested in seeing that match. Surely the WWE must have realised that by now and if they have any interest in making ‘Mania a huge success, they’ll change the main-event. I think the only way to do that is to have a triple-threat match.

The Elimination Chamber’s coming up and obviously the favourite with the fans is Daniel Bryan. Now that the Extreme Rules PPV has been confirmed to be taking place in New Jersey – instead of the rumoured hometown of Daniel Bryan – surely it would be wise to have include Bryan in the WWE World Heavyweight Championship match at WrestleMania?

It’ll come across better on TV if there are 70,000+ people chanting “YES!” at WrestleMania than 15,000 people doing it at Extreme Rules. If that PPV was in his hometown, it would be different. But it’s not. There’s only one problem though. If Daniel Bryan was to win the WWE World Heavyweight Championship at the Elimination Chamber, would it diminish his win compared to him winning the title at WrestleMania?

Would it mean more if he was to win the championship at WrestleMania? Of course it would! WrestleMania 30 will be the biggest show in WWE history and if Bryan won at Elimination Chamber, it wouldn’t feel as important. Yes, he’d still headline WrestleMania, but the excitement and importance of him getting the 1…2…3 and becoming the new champion at the “Showcase of the Immortals” would be even better.

WWE have got themselves into a sticky situation. If they were just to add Daniel Bryan to the main-event at WrestleMania, it belittles Batista’s Royal Rumble win. The whole point of the Rumble match is that the winner gets to main-event WrestleMania against the WWE World Heavyweight Champion.

Batista’s return was supposed to give WWE a huge boost, but it obviously hasn’t worked out the way that the WWE hoped, and that’s simply down to the fact that the fans want Daniel Bryan to be the WWE World Heavyweight Champion. If Bryan wasn’t as over as he is, then we might be viewing the current WrestleMania main-event differently.

One option for the WWE might be if they were to set up a match where Batista puts his title shot on the line against Daniel Bryan because of the fans, but the problem with that is that people would wonder what the point of winning the Rumble was. Obviously none of the other competitors in the Chamber match can be considered as WrestleMania headliners. Not compared to Daniel Bryan anyway. Right now, he’s the only true contender for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship.

I simply can’t see a way of WWE getting themselves out of this situation. They’re going to have to go ahead with the planned Batista/Orton match that a vocal majority of the fans don’t want to see. It’s going to be interesting to see how they handle it. Do they go with Batista/Orton, or do they listen to the fans and put Daniel Bryan in the main-event?

The biggest question of all is – if WWE do go with Bryan, how do they go about putting him in the match?
