Five Great: #Wrestlemania Matches That Could Have Been… #SLTDManiaMonth

Over the years we’ve seen many classic matches take place on WWE’s grand stage but what would have happened if Seth Rollins wasn’t injured in 2015? If CM Punk retained the WWE Championship at Elimination Chamber 2013? Or if Eddie Guerrero was still with us?

Here are Five Great Wrestlemania Match That Could Have Been…This is pure speculation combined with reported ‘matches on paper’, let’s get started

FIVE: The Undertaker Vs. Wade Barrett
Wrestlemania 27

At Bragging Rights 2010, The Undertaker squared off against Kane in a Buried Alive Match for the Big Red Machine’s World Heavyweight Championship. Kane overcame The Deadman after Nexus, led by Wade Barrett, interfered causing Taker to be buried alive.

As the well-informed will know, WWE likes to tease their Wrestlemania storylines/matches early, sometimes starting as early as the autumn of the year prior. Undertaker was attacked and buried alive by the leader of a renegade group, who wouldn’t have liked to see The Deadman take out each member of the Nexus in the lead into Wrestlemania 27 (in the same way Orton ended up doing with CM Punk’s New Nexus) before eventually getting his hands on the ring leader, Barrett, at Mania?

FOUR: World Heavyweight Champion The Undertaker Vs. Kurt Angle Vs. Randy Orton Vs. Rey Mysterio
Wrestlemania 22

The Undertaker took Kurt Angle to the limit during their match at No Way Out 2006 for Angle’s World Heavyweight Championship. At the same event, Randy Orton defeated Rey Mysterio for Mysterio’s Royal Rumble spot in the main event of Wrestlemania.

As we all know, then Smackdown General Manager Teddy Long allowed Mysterio to compete in the Smackdown main event of Wrestlemania 22 making it a three-way between Angle, Orton and Mysterio. But what if Undertaker won the championship at No Way Out? A Fatal 4 Way between Taker and the aforementioned trio would have been inevitable given all the ‘contractual’ clauses the competitors had to get them into the match. The blend of styles would have made for a great bout and something of the grand scale Wrestlemania deserves.

THREE: Eddie Guerrero Vs. Shawn Michaels
Wrestlemania 22

This one falls under the ‘planned matches that didn’t happen category’ due to Eddie Guerrero’s unfortunate passing in November of 2005.

In a truly once-in-a-lifetime, dream match, Guerrero was scheduled to face Shawn Michaels at the big show. No championships, no stipulation just a match between two all-time greats. Just imagine a video package featuring a rivalry between Latino Heat and The Heartbreak Kid. The memories will build it for you.

TWO: WWE Champion Seth Rollins Vs. Dean Ambrose Vs. Roman Reigns
Wrestlemania 32

In November 2015, Seth Rollins fell victim to a busted knee during a match in Dublin, leaving The Architect no choice but to relinquish the WWE Championship. But what would have been of Rollin’s reign had he not suffered such misfortune?

Speculation falls to Rollins holding the championship for a year, winning at Wrestlemania 31 and then headlining Wrestlemania 32. What better than to put the three founding members of The Shield together in a triple-threat match for the Championship that not only closes the story of The Shield but also puts a spotlight on the future of the industry/company on the biggest stage rather than having another Triple H main event?

ONE: WWE Champion CM Punk Vs. John Cena Vs. The Rock
Wrestlemania 29

Wrestlemania 28, The Rock Vs. John Cena, Once In A Lifetime. Only it wasn’t. At Royal Rumble 2013, The Rock defeated CM Punk for the WWE Championship and John Cena won his second Royal Rumble Match. The two were on a collision course heading to an inevitable ‘Twice In A Lifetime’ at Wrestlemania 29.

Punk cashed in his obligatory rematch at the Elimination Chamber pay-per-view and came up short but consider what could have been if Punk had beaten Rocky, regained the championship and headed to the show of shows at the champion. The Rock would have his ‘contractual’ rematch, John Cena would have his Royal Rumble prize and CM Punk would get what he coveted the most – The main event of Wrestlemania.
