Five Opponents for Kevin Owens

Welcome to the first episode of What Would Matt Do : a series of thoughts of what Matt would do if he were in Vince McMahon’s shoes. With the dust from Monday’s Raw settling, we have a new WWE Universal Champion: Kevin Owens. Some would have thought that Roman Reigns or Seth Rollins would have got the pick but Owens was the one that ultimately won the match. With that in mind, let’s look at 5 prospective opponents for KO during his run at the top of the mountain.

#1 Seth Rollins

With Triple H interfering and costing the match for Rollins, you can see he is going to be a little bit angry and this would set up the first title defence for Owens. Did Owens beat Rollins cleanly? No. Pinning Rollins in the ring cleanly would go some way to legitimising Owens as the champion. It would also tie up any lose ends before the build to the eventual Triple H vs Rollins match that is bound to happen in the future.

#2 Chris Jericho

I’m a big Jericho fan and to be honest he could make anyone look good in the ring; an intense match with Owens would sell out an arena quicker than you can say Survivor Series. The two have been put in a relationship of sorts but that won’t last that long. Jericho is amazing at putting over new talent (remember the buzz around Fandango after his match vs Jericho at WrestleMania 29?) and this can easily continue with Owens.

#3 Sami Zayn
Sami Zayn and Owens have had a hell of a past which has been highlighted during their time in NXT and also on the main roster. Zayn and Owens can go at each other in a singles match, catch match, Ironman match and it will be immense. Owens can make Zayn look really strong and still retain the title – both wrestlers end up in a stronger position. We could even have the Kodak moment of Owens finally shaking Zayn’s hand to end the feud – who knows!

#4 Brock Lesnar

If WWE management mean to use Brock Lesnar to help the future of the company, then this match should happen. Lesnar is a wrecking machine and has a rematch vs Randy Orton signed for later on this year and he needs to make other wrestlers look strong. Having Owens beat Lesnar, even if not cleanly, would go a long way to Brock helping the company. You could even utilise Paul Heyman and have him turn on Lesnar (similar to his siding with Big Show). I give to you Kevin Owens: Paul Heyman Guy.

#5 Finn Balor

Finn Balor was never pinned, never lost the title and had to give it up. This will obviously naturally leave a bitter taste in his mouth. Yes, Balor may decide to head for Rollins first but then he’ll want his title back. If you haven’t watched any Owens vs Balor matches from NXT, stop reading this article. Head to the WWE Network and watch some because they are amazing showcases of wrestling. At this point, who wins the title? Who knows, let’s see what happens.
