Is it Time for a Brand Split?

With Shane McMahon returning and the potential of a brand split happening after Wrestlemania, I am asking the question ‘is it time for a brand split?’ There are rumours circulating around WWE that the brand split is imminent and some major changes are on the horizon. There are both positives and negatives to this but this piece is designed to get people talking.

First is the positive of a lighter schedule on the wrestlers. This would mean less injuries and therefore big names wouldn’t miss big events. This year we’ve had Roman Reigns, John Cena, Randy Orton, Sheamus and even some of the NXT superstars becoming injured due to the schedule, therefore a lighter roster would surely benefit the business. The unfortunate aspect of this would be the demeaning of the brand of Smackdown. No longer would they be on a 3 hour show and wrestlers on it might feel aggravated on missing out during this time.

Another strong benefit is that it would finally give the chance to some of the underused stars to shine. Wrestlers like Tyler Breeze and even push up Dolph Ziggler’s stock again. If Breeze was on Smackdown he’d become a mid-card player and be pushing for that top spot rather than what he’s doing now. It could also be how they introduce NXT superstars so they can get a taste of life on the main roster and the travelling element of it. It also shakes up the product and keeps it fresh, the Authority storyline has been going on for two and a half years which is two years too long as far as I’m concerned. It also allows for more experimentation on both brands, whether it’s bringing in an exclusive divisions, tournaments or bringing in some legends to help newcomers push their development.

One of the strong benefits of the brand split is that it gives both rosters a stronger identity. This is everything from the set, music, colour schemes, commentary and way back when they did it before it did feel different. Also I hope it stops the 1 hours’ worth of RAW recap on Smackdown which is a complete waste of time. Fingers crossed it also brings back the awesome annual WWE draft. I’ll be honest in the fact that this excites me more than most things did, the draft kept it alive and the superstars used it to their advantage.

I hear a lot of people unsure of both staying and splitting and to be honest this lies with WWE not sticking to what they want to achieve. What made it work originally was that the brands had been completely separated from 2002 to 2006, only every crossing over for Survivor Series if I remember rightly. The two brands never crossed unless an invasion angle was planned for the big PPV’s such as Wrestlemania, Summerslam, Survivor Series and the Royal Rumble. Also they messed it up further by adding ECW to the mix and having all PPV’s crossing over with matches from each brand which made it hard to follow for those who loved a particular brand.

Overall I don’t know whats right for the best. Do we have the split just to shake things up and get rid of the dead wood or do WWE use it for the best of the business and really show what the superstars can do? Right now we are desperate for a change no matter what that change may be. I’m still thinking that a Cena heel turn would turn the WWE on its head and really push the interest back. You can’t make Ambrose heel in the Reigns story because he’ll play out as a hero to those that hate Reigns so it’s extremely difficult to progress.
