#KWKorner: Does AEW Need to Clearly Define Their Match Rules? (@thekantastic)

So far in the first few weeks of AEW’s new ‘Dynamite’ they’ve exceeding expectations by producing a solid pro wrestling program while managing to create compelling storyline narratives.

But one thing that may confuse or raise questions amongst this generations’ wrestling fanbase is AEW’s concept of ‘win loss’ records, as well as a more leninent application of the rules by referees during matches.

Case in point, a six man tag team match involving Kenny Omega and the Young Bucks continued or even though Jon Moxley interfered and forced Omega to the backstage area, where he proceeded to put the Winnipeg native through a glass table. The match continued regardless.

As Rick Knox exclaimed when Omega chastized him about it on a recent episode of Being The Elite, “nobody wants the main event to end on a DQ (disqualication)”. That being said, and it stands out as a stark contrast to the way WWE would have done things, having matches without any clearly defined rules would mean either matches going forward may have more varied stipulations, or officials are a bit more lax with officiating their matches.

Another aspect of AEW’s difference with WWE is the heavy emphasis on the ‘win loss’ record. Each wrestler that comes out during a match has their win loss record displayed under the graphic for their name, one for their singles record and the other for tag and trios matches.

We saw this past week a very heated tirade from Jon Moxley about how his match with Kenny Onega coming up at Full Gear will now be an unsanctioned match, meaning it will not count on either man’s win or loss record.

I think it’s an interesting departure from WWE’s more disregard of win-loss match ratios since I’ve seen guys get title shots after losing important matches, but it’s still up in the air at this point whether an unsanctioned match really ‘doesn’t count’.

Everyone saw an unsanctioned match, like the one between NXT’s Johnny Gargano and Tommaso Ciampa and Moxley vs. Joey Janella, they know it happened, so how could you not put them into consideration?

It’s an old school way of booking that modern day fans would have to get used to?
