NXT Revisited 29th May: Hostile Takeovers!

And we’re back. I explained my absence in my return column for Raw Revisited which you can read here (and you should, for many reasons!) so I won’t get into it here. Let’s just get straight into talking about the AWESOME second live special of NXT; NXT: Takeover.

Camacho Express….Derailed!

The opening contest of the night saw Adam Rose defeat Camacho (shocker!). The match was entertaining, if not a tad short but both men got to get in some good offence before the end. This was a good way to start the show, get people pumped up (mostly by Adam Rose’s music).

Time For The Ascension To Ascend?

Most of you know that the current state of the tag team division on the main roster is sparse at best. In the last 6 months, we’ve lost the PTP, the Real Americans, we’re about to lose Cody and Goldy and The Shield aren’t functioning in the tag team division any more really. Then you have NXT where tag teams are sprouting up all the time. The top of the list of these teams is The Ascension who have been the NXT tag team champions for 239 days and have been on a tear for months! A team like this is hard to find and would do very well on the main roster right now. It would inject some much needed life into the ever dwindling tag division.

The match between Ascension and Kalisto and El Local was good, save for a few botches by El Local (who most know is Ricardo Rodriguez under the mask). There was a small part of me that wanted to see The Ascension lose this one for a number of reasons:

  1. They haven’t lost a match in a long time and if there was ever a time, its a live special!
  2. It would facilitate their move to the main roster which I am a huge fan of (as you may have guessed from the above paragraph!)

In-Zayn!!

This match. Guys! This match! It was so effing good! It had everything you could possibly want from a match; athleticism, back and forth action, lots of near falls and genuine chemistry between participants! There are some people who just have an “IT” factor, and Sami Zayn is one of those people. He makes everything look so easy and fluid and genuinely loves everything he does inside the ring.

But lets not take anything away from Tyler Breeze here either. I’ve always been a fan of the character and his athleticism but tonight, he took it to a whole different level and brough his A+ game! Kudos to you Mr Breeze, you have impressed me sir!

Mojo Gets Chumped!

Maybe I’m a sadist, but this whole segment made the show for me! I do not like Mojo Rawley, never have, never will. He’s the prime example of a guy who plays football who decides to give wrestling a go, then gets a pass just because he’s big and can run!

So when Rusev (who is a big man who can actually wrestle!) destroyed him with ease and absolutely no offence gotten in by Mojo, I laughed and laughed..

…..I AM a sadist!

Ugh….Natalya!

I’m standing by my decision to not talk about anything that Natalya is in. So this will be short. Charlotte won, as I expected and congrats to her! It was great to see Ric Flair get emotional at his daughters win, he seemed to be genuinely proud of her.

Also, this should have been Charlotte vs Sasha Banks. Natalya needs to stick with Total Divas and leave my NXT alone!

Proof We Need A Cruiserweight Division!

Adrian Neville and Tyson Kidd tore the house down in the main event. They traded moves back and forth, mirrored each other at several points (which may have been way too choreographed but still cool) and generally just made each other look great. I don’t want to hate on Kidd, because he is talented and most of my dislike for him is because he’s Natalya’s husband but he’s just so bland outside the ring that it makes it hard to root for him.

There’s a rumour that they are going to make him into a masked lucha character which could be good since he can just do his thing without being forced to talk and he won’t have the history of Tyson Kidd weighing him down also.

This match really shows that we need a legitimate cruiserweight division in WWE. There are a lot of talented high flying guys who need a place to showcase their abilities and NXT will only cut it for so long The problem with a lot of guys that get moved up to the main roster is that they never reach the level they did while at NXt. Which I imagine can be quite frustrating. But if there was a cruiserweight division for guys like Neville, Kidd, et al it would give them a great place to have high flying matches that matter on the grandest stage in wrestling. It worked before, and it can again!

Well done WWE (and mostly Triple H) for knocking another NXT live special out of the park. This is what wrestling is, and we need more of this and less midgets pulling tails off midget bulls on live tv!
