So I am onto the final instalment of looking back at Backlashes from days gone by. With it now just being a day from the newest incarnation of the event, it’s time to look at Backlash at 2007-2009. How many “Who booked that” moments will appear this time out?
Backlash 2007
Backlash 2007 was main evented by a Fatal Four Way match as John Cena retained the WWE Championship against Edge, Randy Orton and Shawn Michaels. The other World Title match witnessed The Undertaker and Batista drawing a Last Man Standing match, yes who booked that! We had a third World Title match, this time over the ECW title and another who booked that moment as Vince McMahon pinned Bobby Lashley to become the ECW Champion, yes Vince had Shane O’Mac and Umaga on his team in this handicap match but still who booked that??
In the other three matches on the card, The Hardy Boyz retained the World Tag Team titles beating Lance Cade & Trevor Murdoch, Melina retained the Womens Championship against Mickie James and Chris Benoit retained the United States Championship against MVP (Remember him?)
Backlash 2008
The main event of Backlash 2008 was yet again a Fatal 4 Way match over the WWE Championship, this time it was an elimination match. JBL got eliminated first, closely followed by John Cena. HHH eliminated Randy Orton last to win the title. In the World Heavyweight Championship match, Undertaker retained the title by making Edge tap out, and in the ECW Title match Kane beat Chavo Guerrero to retain.
Elsewhere, Matt Hardy beat MVP to win the United States title, Big Show beat Great Khali in a match booked to last over 8 minutes…really? Who booked that? HBK beat Batista where Chris Jericho was a referee, and in a 12 Diva match the team of Beth Phoenix, Melina, Layla, Gillian Hall (Yes she did wrestle), Victoria & Natalya went over the team of Mickie James, Maria, Ashley, Michelle McCool, Cherry (Remember her?) & Kelly Kelly.
Then there was one….
Backlash 2009
In the main event Edge beat John Cena in a Last Man Standing match for the World Heavyweight Championship. In the Co-Main event Legacy (Randy Orton, Cody Rhodes & Ted DiBiase) beat HHH, Batista & Shane O’Mac so Randy Orton became the WWE Champion, in a rather interesting type of match that has a habit of happening at Backlash…..
In the best “Who booked that” moment, Santina Marella, err I mean Santino Marella beat Beth Phoenix in 3 seconds, yes 3 seconds!!! To top it off, this was over the Miss Wrestlemania crown Santino err Santina won at Wrestlemania haha.
Elsewhere Christian beat Jack Swagger to win the ECW Title, Chris Jericho beat Ricky Steamboat (Oodles of you still got it chants from memory too), Kane beat CM Punk, and Jeff Hardy beat brother Matt Hardy in an “I Quit” match.
