Old Skool View Presents…Watching The Old Way

The title says it all. This article is going to be yours truly looking back at the good old days of wrestling, back when everything was a surprise and we all enjoyed wrestling for what it was, without knowing the supposed ins and outs of the business.

With todays advances in technology and with the internet being huge, we’re forever hearing rumours, spoilers and predicted cards for events months weeks away. The internet is an amazing place to discuss all things wrestling however is it also spoiling the viewing?

This year I have gone back to watching wrestling as I would have back in the 90’s when I first started watching. Just by watching it all unfold in front of me, not reading “dirt sheets”, not reading wrestling result websites, not using social media until i’ve seen the wrestling to avoid all the spoilers etc, and shockingly i’ve come to really enjoy wrestling again and I am able to view it with a different perspective.

Looking back to the good old days, which for the majority of you will be the attitude era. Back then the internet was in its early days and hadn’t hit the boom period. Can you imagine how poor the attitude era could have been if it was played out in todays era? Can you imagine reading that Mick Foley morphed into Cactus Jack for his feud with HHH? Can you imagine reading about HBK vs Taker inside HIAC? The shock and wow factor would be gone.

Going further back, how about reading that Bret Hart vs Stone Cold was a bloody affair, then you have to watch it already knowing the outcome instead of the suspense? What about HBK vs Bret in the ironman match? Heck what about the screw job? Imagine how much of a let down that would have been if you knew what was happening?

Here’s a little challenge for our readers. If you read rumours, spoilers etc, try going just one week with just watching wrestling for what it is, the story telling and in-ring action instead of the backstage rumours/politics you read about, and see how if you view it differently at all.

Now for my next article i’m going to be doing an article on one of my favourite Tag Teams of all time, so look out for that one.
