So on Tuesday night, live from Glasgow, we learned that Shane McMahon would be Smackdown Live’s 5th and final member of the Survivor Series team. This big announcement came at the end of the show following the 6 man tag team main event, but the question surrounded his inclusion was, “why?”
One thing that I don’t like about this, is the fact that in order for Shane to get the spot in the Smackdown Live Survivor Series team, he had to replace someone, and that someone was Baron Corbin.
I’ve been intrigued by and in support of a push of sort that WWE seem to be giving him, and him in amongst the very best on the team gave him the chance to work with some of the best wrestling in the industry. Yet on Smackdown in Glasgow, Corbin would sustain an ‘injury’ during a match with Kalisto that would rule him out of the match completely.
My thoughts on this were that it was a real shame for Corbin to lose such an opportunity, but once the involvement of Shane McMahon was announced, I figured that he was the sacrifice to ensure Shane was involved in the match.
Now to WHY Shane is involved, there are a few possibilities, but the most likely is it’s to set up another angle down the line. Many have speculated that Shane and Brock Lesnar will face off at some point down the road, and with both on the Survivor Series card, this would be another chance for the two to interact in some way.
My other thought would be to have Mick Foley cost Shane the match, leaving the door open for them to perhaps have a match of some sort, although I’m unsure of Foley’s wrestling status at the moment.
With Randy Orton, Bray Wyatt, Dean Ambrose & AJ Styles also making up the numbers for the team, it seems unlikely that McMahon would further any sort of storyline with either participant on his own team, but rather an outside factor.
It is odd that with a roster full of talent, it’s in fact the Commissioner himself that has taken up a role, so there HAS to be a reason for his inclusion, either at the PPV itself or further down the line.
As of writing, other than ‘bragging rights’, there isn’t actually anything at stake for the winner of the 5 on 5 elimination tag team match, which is odd to me. I think champions should have been omitted from the match itself so they could be in separate matches. I don’t quite understand the logic of not having Ambrose and Styles for the WWE Championship at Survivor Series, and instead have them team up together. Shane is probably there to keep the teams together, which will inevitably implode at some point.
So let’s assume it is in fact a set up for Shane vs Brock, how would it all go down?
Well Brock is a member of the Raw roster, so him interfering in the match to earn his side the win would make sense, however, I would go for a Smackdown Live win, with Shane one of the winning members of the team, then Lesnar running down to lay him out after. My only problem is, would that be a big enough finish for a PPV? We saw at Summerslam Lesnar standing tall over Shane AND Randy Orton, so would they really go with a finish so similar at an event just a few months later?
Time will tell, but it’ll be interesting to see at both Raw on November 14th, as well as Smackdown the next night.
We all know Shane McMahon has it in him to put on a match against almost anybody on the roster, which was evident at Wrestlemania 32, but would a match against Brock Lesnar be too much for even ‘The Boy Wonder’? himself?
