The Voice of Reason: The Stale Angle of The Authority

For the past, well to me what feels like a lifetime, “The Authority” have played the evil, power hungry tyrants who have aligned all the pieces to attempt to destroy anything or anyone they dislike. In the process of this, they have given themselves what they want, ultimately ending up with Seth Rollins as WWE World Heavyweight Champion.

We have seen similar angles in the past with the same role being played by Vince McMahon, which gave most, if not all of you the countless memories of Stone Cold Steve Austin terrorising Mr McMahon. But my question to you is, has this entire authority angle become stale?

For a long time, each weekly episode of Raw felt like it started the same. First with Triple H and Stephanie coming out to announce a “stack the odds” sort of match featuring either John Cena, Daniel Bryan, Dolph Ziggler, and more recently, Dean Ambrose and Roman Reigns. Seth Rollins would then stumble on to tell us he’s the future and present and made the Shield, blah blah blah. It was almost like watching the same show, just in case someone had missed a Raw episode, they would get a complete recap/repeat of the previous week. Not really my ideal form of “entertainment”.

Similarly now, there is usually some form of match, where Kane, Seth Rollins and J&J Security will come out and get involved. Now, the entire formula for WWE has revolved around stacking the odds against superstars, and the crowd loves to see any wrestler go against The Authority and come out on top. I am not against it, I just firmly believe there are new and fresher ways of doing so.

For example, Kane had been the “Director of Operations” for a long time, and I do not doubt he will be back for at least one more run as Masked Kane before he retires. But shouldn’t Kane be used to put younger wrestlers over? We constantly see him go against Reigns or Ambrose, but why can’t we see Kane take on less established superstars like Neville, Titus O’Niel, Erick Rowan and Luke Harper. Isn’t Kane the brother of The Undertaker after all?

We also see J&J Security each week, the most beatable guys on the roster. Now this does add comedic value and the crowd love to see them get their asses kicked, but does this do anything to “stack the odds” against the babyfaces? I would much rather see The Authority use people like Harper, Rowan, Ryback, Titus, as their heaters, because after the babyfaces inevitably overcome the odds, they will have proven to the crowd their true heart and worth.

So where could the angle go from here? I’ve briefly touched on this question earlier saying The Authority need new heaters. But personally, I would love to see more twists in the tail, for example, Triple H turning face with Stephanie remaining heel. A slightly different dynamic that we are used to, with each fighting for power and decisions of the company.

It would be easy to build to as well, you can have Triple H go up against Roman Reigns at SummerSlam and ultimately second guessing his decision in getting behind Seth Rollins. This could set up for a Survivor Series tussle between Team Steph and Team Hunter.

What do you think? Feel free to comment.
