Time for the Heavweight Title to change Hands

The latest edition of Monday Night Raw is in the books, and Seth Rollins is still the champ.

Of course we all knew he would be. Playing the cowardly-heel role for his entire championship reign, Rollins, by my count, has only one clean title defense via ladder match against Dean Ambrose at Money in the Bank. Besides that one exception, it’s been the same familiar routine week in and week out. Rollins talks big then weasels his way out of trouble, or is bailed out due to convenient unforeseen circumstances.

It’s getting old.

Seth Rollins is a supremely talented performer and, given the opportunity, he is capable of putting on great matches with anyone on the WWE roster, or any professional wrestler in the world for that matter. But instead of allowing Rollins to show his in-ring prowess, the WWE insists upon making his character a coward, and allowing him to win his matches, and/or retain his belt, in ways designed to garner cheap heat from the WWE Universe.

I understand that this is a “slow-burn”, but right now the flame is flickering and getting ready to die out. It’s time to either take the handcuffs off of Rollins or give the belt to someone else. I’m not saying that Rollins has to have clean finishes every time he has a match. Many heel champions through the years have managed to succeed without having clean finishes.

Ric Flair, for example, was called “The Dirtiest Player in the Game” for a reason. Flair did whatever he had to do to win. Each match would lead to a new way for him to cheat. He had assistance from the Four Horsemen, he would pay someone to cripple his opponent prior to a big match, he would sneak a foreign object in his trunks and knock someone out with it while the ref was distracted, so on and so on. The Nature Boy’s character was always creative, and always taken seriously.

Rollins, on the other hand, has become a joke. While it was funny short-term, it should be seen as a problem when your champion is compared to Justin Bieber. People are no longer taking “The Architect” seriously and casual fans are going to start tuning out if they haven’t already. People complained when Brock Lesnar was the champ last year because he was rarely there to defend the championship. But at least with Lesnar you had a champ that you could believe. A legitimate division 1 collegiate wrestler, a former UFC heavyweight champion, an absolute beast and an all-around freak of nature, Lesnar had and still has all the makings of a professional wrestling champion.

Rollins doesn’t have those same physical attributes and he never will, but that doesn’t mean that his character has to be a coward. If you want a coward as your champion, give the belt to The Miz. If you want a true professional wrestler as your champ, then let Seth do his thing without all the corny plots and stupid storylines.

Bottom line is, when it comes to the WWE World Heavyweight championship, it’s time for the WWE to either move in a different direction or….. give Seth Rollins his balls back.
