Tybo Talks… The Cesaro Connection?

Welcome one and all, I am Tybo! and by now you should know that I am the ‘Five Star General’ of this operation we call SLTD Wrestling.

Now, I know this is a split subject in the SLTD team. There has been more than one conversation between us all about Cesaro. So it got me thinking what does the outside wrestling world think?

So my question to you all this week is does Cesaro really not connect with the fans? For every person I hear saying that he does, there is another saying that he is missing something. What that something is, no one seems to be able to put their finger on.

So what is about Cesaro that does not connect?

Antonio Cesaro debuted on WWE TV the April 20th episode of Smackdown, looking for a contract. It wasn’t long before Cesaro had his contract, and the U.S Title after beating Santino Marella. A some what forgotten title reign these days, but he was actually champion for a shocking 239 days. For someone with so much potential in his first year, WWE seemed to always have Cesaro around but never standing out. After this he had arguably one of the matches of the year with Sami Zayn on NXT. He has been a Heyman Guy, a Real American where he was a Superior American. The first ever winner of the Andre The Giant Battle Royal, And more recently one half of BTE with Tyson Kidd.

Cesaro himself has said on more than one occasion that he is a throwback, and I think in many respects he is. His solid in ring work, as both a grappler or a speed man and lets not forget his amazingly freakish strength, shows he would be a top draw in Vincent McMahon Sr’s WWWF. Personally, I have been amazed more than once with Cesaro’s insane feats of strength. Not only that but his agility and fluidity in the ring is very rarely matched. I think all these things and more would make Cesaro a huge star of time gone by.

Just imagine Cesaro vs. Bruno Sammartino in Madison Square Garden in the late 1960’s right in the middle of Sammartino’s first WWWF title reign, this would be a great bout to watch even in today’s standards. Imagine Cesaro vs. Ricky ‘The Dragon’ Steamboat in 1987 coming off his amazing Wrestlemania match with Randy Savage. Imagine Cesaro vs. Bret ‘The Hitman’ Hart in the 1990’s when Bret was the best there was, the best is… you know the rest. Imagine Cesaro vs. Dean Malenko on WCW Nitro in 1998. Imagine Cesaro vs. Chris Benoit in 2001. All of these matches and many more with many more stars from back in the day would be five star matches and main events on any show card.

I think, he would of thrived in a different era. Cesaro would be the major heel foreigner from Switzerland, who hates ‘stupid american idiots’ in the Federation era. He would be the European Champion of the Attitude Era who was bringing prestige back to the title after an ‘unworthy american’ was champion, and probably multi time Hardcore Champion because, well… everyone was! He would be the cocky brash upstart of the Ruthless Aggression Era, and I wouldn’t be shocked if he was the fifth member of Evolution. All these things and more make me think that Cesaro should of been wrestling 15 years ago.

Honestly, I cant think of a good reason why he wouldn’t dominate the main event scene if he was given the chance. Its seems to me that WWE give him a small chance to shine, and he delivers. Then when all is looking good, WWE move onto the next guy and Cesaro is left stranded again. This has happened on more than one occasion, Cesaro being a ‘Heyman Guy’ should of been awesome, should of been the start of something, but it seemed to have no direction and eventually fizzled out and Cesaro was back where he started. The same with His and Jack Swagger in a tag team. This could of been great for them both and ended with them both being pushed for a major title and again it all but fizzed out and nothing much came from it. The Andre The Giant Battle Royal could of meant something… it doesn’t. Now we are in a similar situation with Tyson Kidd, where the tag team could of been great for them both, but now Cesaro is stuck again.

The last few weeks, with him facing Cena for the U.S Title has been great for him and I really hope this continues and is the beginning of something huge for him! I’m hoping for at least a Triple Treat U.S Title match at Summer Slam with Cena vs. Owens vs. Cesaro. I think he would be a great U.S Champion, but I really think he could be a greater WWE World Heavyweight Champion. Do I think this will happen any time soon? Probably not. Do I think Cesaro should be eyes to win the Money In The Bank next year, and that could be his starter block into the WWE Championship? Absolutely! But do I think that will happen? Probably not.

I honestly think the main issue with Cesaro not ‘connecting’ with the fans is that he has no real strong character, and its hard to relate to that. There is very little reason behind why Cesaro does anything he does, he doesn’t get much time on the mic or backstage to get any sort of gimmick over with the fans. Its still not completely clear to me if he is even a face or a heel. The fans that love him, really love him. It just seems to me that WWE don’t really know what to do with him, so he floats about always on the show, but never really starting a feud.

This is why I am hoping that after the last two awesome matches with Cena, and the crowd reaction from Monday’s match, and that he main evented the show, all of these things will show that Cesaro is without a doubt a main event player. As with most superstars on the WWE roster, only time will tell.

So that’s this weeks Tybo Talks…

Do you agree or disagree? Do you Dislike Cesaro and you can tell me why? Comment below I would like to hear your thoughts.
