Welcome, everyone to the latest edition of #MouthingOff (with MikeJC): Dynamite Weekly, the weekly review feature on AEW Dynamite here on SLTDWrestling.com. I will be giving my thoughts and opinions on all the highlights of the show as well as giving the “Remarkable Wrestler” of the week. So here are the highlights of the Wednesday, September 16th edition of AEW Dynamite.
FTR vs. Jurassic Express
Dynamite opened with a hell of a match, but before the match even began, the Young Bucks made an appearance during the Jurassic Express intro. They entered the ring and double super kicked referee Mike Posey. Then walked backstage to gorilla position, Matt handed a wad of cash to Tony Khan, basically being prepared to pay a fine. The Young Bucks walked passed FTR after this, and FTR loved every second of it.
After FTR finally made their way to the ring, we get a match that is a perfect example of how to kick off any wrestling show. The more I watch Jungle Boy the more I’m convinced about how good he already is and will be in the near future, and Luchasaurus has one of the best hot tags in AEW and I’ve stated numerous times in the passed he is a future main eventer. These two teams worked very well together as AEW continues to show their superiority in tag team wrestling as a whole. FTR did what they do best to win this match, cut off the ring and isolated one opponent. The finish came when Luchasaurus was tossed into the crowd and Jungle Boy, had a roll up on Dax, when Cash flipped it in Dax’s favor and then Cash and Tully Blanchard would give some added leverage to secure the victory.
Segment Rating: 7/10
As far as the Young Bucks go I absolutely love this thing they’re going through where they are completely serious and don’t care about whether or not a referee has to go down to do it. All this Elite stuff has me very intrigued and I love that I don’t know where this is going at all, the way it should be.
The match, a complete master class of what tag team wrestling is all about. As I already mentioned, Jungle Boy keeps getting better and hasn’t even reached the prime of his career yet. Luchasaurus is amazing at everything he does like always. FTR continue to win, and win decisively and I’m always hyped to watch them and see where they go from here.
“Hangman” Adam Page vs. Frankie Kazarian
Kenny Omega came out before the match to do commentary on this match, and he spent the majority of this match acknowledging that he isn’t a tag team wrestler anymore and that he won’t be doing that anymore, where as Tony Schiavone made it clear that Page expects the tag team to continue. They also made clear that this upcoming match was meant to be a tag match, Kenny and Page versus SCU, and it’s implied that didn’t happen because of Kenny.
As for this match, we got another great match, Kazarian and Page really put it all out there and just killed it. I loved everything about it, the match was fast paced, it was back and forth, there was some great reversals, just so good in every way. The finish came when Page was on the apron and Kazarian went to hit the second slingshot cutter of the match, but Page scouted it, then Kazarian followed that up with a bent over leg drop attempt, which was also reversed and Page would capitalize with a buckshot lariat for the pin.
Following the match Kenny Omega wasted no time, leaving and not acknowledging Page at all, leading to Page looking around for Kenny expecting a celebration with him.
Segment Rating: 7/10
This entire segment was top notch story telling. The Elite stuff, continues to build as I mentioned earlier, and it was followed up by an amazing match. Kenny Omega made it seem like he didn’t want to be there at all, and he’s trying to put Hangman and tag team wrestling behind him. It’s very clear to me this is going to lead to a singles match (probably at Full Gear) between Omega and Page. Also Kazarian did a hell of a job in the match, as Hangman is built back up as a singles star whether he knows it or not.
MJF Dominates
MJF has a very short straight to the finish match with Shawn Dean, where he hit an arm bar as soon as the bell rang for the immediate tap out. The story is after the match. MJF gets on the mic after Wardlow disposes of Shawn Dean, he calls Moxley cheater, and that he deserves to still be undefeated and be the champion because of it. MJF continues by saying it seems the only way to get anywhere in this company is to be part of a group or a faction, but even though he’s always been a “Lone Wolf”, he might be ready to join a “Wolfpack” and that he will be weighing his options.
Segment Rating: 4/10
The rating for this segment is solely for the promo after, this was hands down one of MJF’s worst promos, all the way down to him actually howling to imply he’s ready to join a “wolfpack”. It was bad, it made him look bad, and I hated it a lot.
Inner Circle (Chris Jericho & Jake Hager) vs. Private Party
Before this match, earlier in the night, we are informed something happened backstage and we see Matt Hardy down holding his knee. Private Party are there, and Alex Marvez asks Isiah Cassidy if he saw anything, where he replies that they were preparing for their match turned around then Matt was down. Then Jericho and Hager walked up pretending to be concerned then they joked at Matt’s expense, possibly implying they are responsible for the attack since Jericho flaunted his bat.
The match itself, was not bad at all, but it’s actually my least favorite of the night mainly because MJF’s match was a complete squash. The reason I don’t love this match, is because I’ve seen it before. This is pretty much every Private Party match against people higher on the totem poll. There was back and forth action for the most part, but the finish came when Isiah Kassidy hit a springboard cutter, then took too long to climb to the top rope to hit a flying senton after selling his back most of the match and that leads to the judas effect for the victory by Jericho.
After the match Jericho goes to continue the assault on Kassidy but Marq Quen would hit a Pele kick on Jericho, as Hager pulled Jericho out after that to make the save.
Segment Rating: 5/10
I would love to have rated this match better but I just can’t because as I mentioned earlier it was your typical Private Party putting over another team match. Those guys have bright futures but it seems like that is a ways away. Jericho and Hager get another tag team win as they continue to build that up even though they are absolutely not needed in the tag division at all.
NWA Women’s World Championship: Thunder Rosa(C) vs. Ivelisse (w/ Diamante)
Thunder Rosa is amazing. There’s no other way to start this but by saying that. This match was exactly what women’s wrestling in AEW should be. The problem, neither of these ladies work for AEW. This match was so good. Both of these ladies killed it and got a lot of hard strikes, and great wrestling moves. You can see a chemistry between these two that they clearly have worked before and know how to have a great match every time. The finish came when Ivelisse hit a snapmare into a head kick for a near fall, then she tried to hit another head kick but it was reversed by Thunder Rosa into a Tombstone Piledriver for the pin.
After the match Diamante would enter the ring and attack Thunder Rosa, which prompts Hikaru Shida to jump in from the crowd to make the save and chase off Diamante and Ivelisse. She picks up the NWA Championship looks at it before placing it on Thunder Rosa’s shoulder.
Segment Rating: 6/10
This match was a showcase of talent, and I really hope that this relationship with NWA is more then just temporary, because I’d love to see the likes of Allysin Kay, Melina, and Marti Belle, in AEW to round out the division and bring some real veteran talent to it. I loved this match and the post match set up a tag match for next week Thunder Rosa & Hikaru Shida versus Ivelisse & Diamante. Also I think they might be teasing a rematch between Rosa and Shida this time for the NWA Title.
Archer & Moxley Prepare for War
It is announced that Moxley and Archer will be putting together six man teams for next week. Jake Roberts and Lance Archer come out, and say they aren’t happy about teaming with anyone, but they made a deal with a “Tasmanian Devil”. This brings out Taz, who states that they made a deal to help Archer in this six man because they said that when, not if Archer beats Moxley for the title, Brian Cage gets the first shot.
This brings out Moxley who makes his entrance from the crowd. Before Moxley could speak a masked man in the audience attacks him and that brings out Brian Cage, the masked man is Ricky Starks of course and they start beating on Moxley together and beating up security.
Moxley is saved by newly signed Will Hobbs who is wielding a steel chair. Moxley gets on the mic and states that Hobbs is one of his partners for the six man tag, and then he calls out Darby Allin to be his second partner.
Segment Rating: 5/10
This segment was fine for what it was to set up the six man tag match. The layers here all make sense Cage wants a title shot, so the deal between Jake and Taz (that probably won’t come true) gives Cage incentive to be in this match. The Darby Allin/Ricky Starks feud continues, and the champ and number 1 contender collide before the championship match as I said, it did everything it was supposed and I didn’t hate it.
Parking Lot Fight: Best Friends vs. Santana & Ortiz
This match, was one of the best out of ring wrestling matches I’ve seen in a very long time. It had everything, hardcore elements that played into the personal feud, back and forth action, and storytelling. The Best Friends looked amazing in an environment that clearly favored Santana & Ortiz. There was broken car windshields, 2x4s, sheets of wood. It was all perfectly done and I loved every second of it.
The closing sequence came after Santana and Ortiz powerbombed Trent through a windshield which looked gruesome and cut up Trent’s back very good. After some brawling Santana gets a lead pipe and prepares to hit Trent with it, when Orange Cassidy appears, coming out of the trunk of a car, and he gives Santana an Orange Punch with a chain wrapped fist knocking him out. Chuck would piledrive Santana on a separate car hood, and Trent would give Ortiz a crunchy onto a wooden board layed across a pickup truck bed for the pin.
After the match, the Best Friends walk up to and enter Trent’s mom Sue’s van, and she stops the car and flips off Santana and Ortiz and drives away.
Segment Rating: 8/10
This match was amazing from start to finish. The story was told throughout the match. It even played out after the match, and this was a great way to end this personal feud. This was the best match of either of these two teams AEW tenure to this point and one of the best Dynamite main events ever.
I speculated last week that tension within the Inner Circle might happen over Jericho and Hager entering the tag division while Ortiz and Santana are already in it basically holding Santana and Ortiz back. I think that speculation is warranted especially after this match where not a single Inner Circle member appeared in response to Orange Cassidy getting involved in this match. So I expect tensions within the Inner Circle to rise because of it.
Remarkable Wrestler of the Week
For this episode of AEW Dynamite, the Remarkable Wrestler or in this case Wrestlers, is The Best Friends.
The Best Friends get the RWOW this week for their performance in the main event. They flourished in an environment they certainly aren’t used to and absolutely killed it in a hell of a match.
Overall
So that’s all the highlights of this episode of AEW Dynamite on September 16th, overall I give this show a 6 out of 10. There was a lot of great wrestling matches on this show, what brought it down essentially was some of the talking segments not delivering. The main event, the opener, Hangman versus Kazarian, and the NWA Womens World Championship match all were so good and showed how wrestling on a weekly wrestling show is supposed to be done.
