Welcome to the 2nd edition of The Raw Rundown on SLTD Wrestling, where I provide my opinion on what was the good, and what was the not so good of this past episode of Monday Night Raw as well as giving the night’s Standout Superstar, so I present to you, the highlights of the August 10th edition of Monday Night Raw and my feedback on this Raw Rundown!
Seth Rollins and Dominik Mysterio Bringing the Heat
The show kicked off with the contract signing of the match between Seth Rollins and Dominik Mysterio, as well as a second contract making Dominik Mysterio a WWE Superstar. The contract signing was hosted by Samoa Joe and things got heated from the outset with him and Seth. Seth kept going on how he wanted to be Seth ‘Freaking’ Rollins but he had to do what he had to do to save the future of Monday Night Raw by becoming the Monday Night Messiah.
Once the contracts were signed, all hell broke loose. Once Seth got the kendo stick, he just couldn’t stop whacking Dominik with it. Seth even got Murphy involved with the melee by having him tie Dominik up in the ropes, then just brutally hitting him with kendo sticks back and forth until Dominik couldn’t take anymore. I counted that Dominik took 30 kendo stick shots, and I think it’s safe to say, if this was some sort of initiation process, then Dominik got it pretty good.
Segment Rating: 7/10
Dominik took the shots hard, and I think he nailed it in this segment, it is adding that extra bit to make the rivalry become even more personal. Seth is bringing experience to Dominik, and having Dominik learn from Seth, I couldn’t of a better person to kickstart his career within WWE than the Monday Night Messiah.
RETRIBUTION
Tonight we saw RETRIBUTION do some more damage to WWE property on Raw, breaking a window at the entrance to the WWE Performance Center, and they also to flip a car. RETRIBUTION started last week on Monday Night Raw, and now it looks like we won’t be seeing the end of them anytime soon.
Segment Rating: 5/10
I’m not going to lie, I’m kind of expecting more from RETRIBUTION. When I think of retribution, it’s like how am I going to get back my opponent like they never seen before, harder than before, and with the members of the faction unknown, although Carmella is rumoured to be one of these members, I just don’t know what to think of RETRIBUTION as a faction.
Akira Tozawa and Ninjas vs Ricochet & Cedric Alexander and The Viking Raiders
We also saw an 8 man tag team match between Akira Tozawa and his Ninjas, against Ricochet, Cedric Alexander and The Viking Raiders. There was ups and down in this match, I think this was mainly so that R-Truth could pose as one of Akira Tozawa’s ninjas, as he was the last ninja before Tozawa, he didn’t want to fight, so it was clear that it was R-Truth, so here was the inevitable 24/7 championship change.
Segment Rating: 2/10
Was this even necessary, I think even just a backstage segment where Akira Tozawa was consulting his Ninjas and R-Truth posing as one of the Ninjas would’ve been sufficient, not wasting TV time by having 8-man tag that didn’t even go through one commercial break, my opinion of the 24/7 Championship is still the same. Just retire the championship WWE, it’s just getting boring and it’s always when you need some sort of filler in the show.
Asuka vs Bayley (w/ Sasha Banks)
The match scheduled on Raw between Asuka vs Bayley had the stipulation that if Asuka beat Bayley, then Asuka would get a shot at Sasha Bank’s Raw Women’s Championship at Summerslam. This match was actually pretty good, it was close to match of the night in my opinion, edging out to Randy Orton vs Kevin Owens, but overall, I think this story with Asuka, Bayley and Banks is turning out to be pretty feisty.
Segment Rating: 5/10
I think this Asuka and Sasha Banks feud is actually turning out to be pretty good, it’s definitely picking up for me and I can’t wait to see their match at Summerslam.
Raw Underground
Raw Underground happened again this week, this time Shayna Baszler got in the mix. Which I think was a great move. Shayna used to be in the UFC, and Raw Underground is definitely UFC-like in terms of the fighting. So Raw Underground would be a great fit for Shayna Baszler.
Segment Rating: 5/10
I think Shayna being on Raw Underground is a great way to boost this third hour, with Shayna’s history in MMA and the UFC, her experience would bring up hopefully some great fights on Raw Underground in the near future.
Randy Orton Drops Ric Flair
Wow. I was not expecting things to pick up that quickly. Firstly, Ric Flair cutting that promo was probably the best promo I’ve seen from him since he’s been back. And he did well to boost Randy Orton heading into his Summerslam bout against Drew McIntyre for the WWE Championship. Things definitely got heated when Randy was calling Ric out about how his ego made him have this “unnecessary” match between him and Owens, then they exchange words about how Ric wanted Orton to not beat Cena’s record, but his record.
Then at the end, they hugged, then as Ric was about to exit the ring. BAM! Low blow from Randy, who is the dirtiest player in the game now? Then things got worse as Randy did the inevitable punt to Ric, writing off for good.
Segment Rating: 9/10
This segment was no doubt the standout of tonight, Randy and Ric played their roles perfectly and I think that the story just got even better between Randy and Drew with this segment. The only thing I wish they didn’t do was the blackout when Randy punted Ric, I’m sure Ric would’ve been fine taking a punt, even if they made it look real even though it was kayfabe, like Randy’s chair shot to Edge’s neck at the start of the year, impart from that, probably the best segment of the night.
Superstar Standout
The Superstar Standout of this episode of Raw, in my opinion, was Seth Rollins
With his Monday Night Messiah gimmick, I believe tonight he hit the nail on the coffin on how well he did tonight. His promo work was astounding, he really told his side of the story perfectly and that is why he is my Standout Superstar.
Overall
So that is the main highlights of the 10th August edition of Monday Night Raw, overall, I give the show a 5 out of 10, best segment of the night for sure was Randy Orton dropping Ric Flair from his side, that was just probably the best segment that could’ve happened leading to Orton’s match against Drew McIntyre at Summerslam. And the worst segment of the night probably belongs to the 24/7 Championship segment, I just think it’s useless and it’s just getting really repetitive and boring.
