#OnTheMat: Making Mojo Marvellous (@maruwe22)

I love Mojo Rawley. For me, he is one of my 3 M’s of WWE (the others being of course Maven and Mick Foley). I’ve followed Mojo through his debut on NXT to his current standing in WWE and I think its about time Mojo becomes Marvellous once more. So this week I present to you, dear internet reader, 4 new faces of Mojo we could see.

Gimmick 1 : Mean Mojo

Mean Mojo kicks arse, takes names and kicks arse again. He doesn’t speak on the mic, doesn’t cut promos, just leaves his words to what he does in the ring. This could work with Mojo; after his initial debut, his run as a tag team with Zack Ryder and his weird backstage promo push, he could just be a silent fighter. Let Mojo interfere in matches to begin with, give him a new and more physical finisher and let him keep hitting it on wrestlers, week after week. He could attack people backstage, in the ring, in the crowd. Then, when he’s in the ring, let him have squash matches and build up his finisher to be as effective as an F5 or a Tombstone Piledriver. The more credible the finisher, the bigger the beast he becomes. Give him a move set that other wrestlers aren’t using to protect his character even more – let him have the devastating clothesline or the hard hitting Spike DDT. Then, he can move up to the roster and become the main event heel we’ve missed for a long time.

Gimmick 2 : Hype Bro version 2.0

I honestly do miss the Hype Bro’s as a tag team, so why not bring it back – Mojo and Matt, the Hype Bro’s. This tag team would be the pretty much ultimate face tag team (right up there with New Day), and with the two contrasting wrestling styles, personas and attitudes, this could be hilarious in so many ways. Riddle and Rawley would also complement each other, in a similar way that Enzo and Cass had during their tenures in NXT and on the Main Roster. The tag division needs some spice and variety added to it, so allow Rawley to become the Tag Team wrestler we have known and loved before. Let them chase after the belts for a few months before having a decent and long reign as Tag Champs. Let them become the focal point of a rebuilt Tag Team division. And then, when the tag team eventually breaks up, you’ve got two singles wrestlers who are ready for new feuds and storylines!

Gimmick 3 : Marvellous Mojo

Who doesn’t love a cocky heel character? Marvellous Mojo would look down on other wrestlers, the crowd, anyone. He thinks he is better than everyone else and probably is right. Marvellous Mojo could work in multiple ways; as a singles wrestler, as a tag team wrestler teaming with Bobby Roode (The Glory Marvellous Boys anyone?), or joining up with Cesaro, Nakamura and Zayn on SmackDown as a faction. Think of the combination of Triple H’s initial Hunter Hearst Helmsley gimmick in WWE, mixed with the brashness of Randy Orton and the hard hitting-ness of Goldberg, all rolled into one wrestler. Could Mojo pull it of? I reckon he could, and in doing so would become a major player on either Raw or SmackDown.

Retribution Mojo

Think everything which Mojo has seen and been through during his tenure in WWE. All that frustration, annoyance and anger could well see him be a member of Retribution. A hard hitting Mojo, a vengeful Mojo. Given the chance, let him show how he could work as a heel wrestler. He could fill any part of a faction – as part of a tag team within the faction, a singles wrestler within the faction, or even as a manager or old school enforcer style role within Retribution. Giving Mojo the chance to shine as part of a faction means that he can help get over current talent within the faction itself, as well as giving him the rub that he deserves. Factions have always been used to pushing and boosting talent, helping talent get over and trying out new characters or gimmicks. Including Mojo as part of Retribution ticks all these boxes and gives Mojo a chance to shine.

Closing thoughts

Now is the ideal time to rebook and recreate characters in WWE. Under the spotlight of the Performance Centre, crowd reactions can be catered for specific scenarios and characters could come to life. Please, give Mojo the chance to show what he can do and let him roam free. And the question for you dear reader is simple – what Mojo do you want to see in the ring?
