SLTD Predicts – AJ Styles vs John Cena

We are well under way with SLTD Wrestling’s #RumbleWeek, and by now I’m sure you all know what we do.

Once again Team SLTD have gotten together to give our thoughts on who we think will win the match for the WWE Championship, AJ Styles vs John Cena

We all give our thoughts below, give them a read and then tell us what you think.

@maruwe22 (What Would Matt Do?)
You have the man who has had the best 2016 vs the man who has been WWE for the past decade. Again, this match is too close to call. I like this as past title matches at the Rumble have been predictable and it’s nice to have a little bit of variety in that respect. My head and my heart disagree a LOT with picking one winner for this match. Ultimately, Cena should equal Flair’s record at WrestleMania, which leaves me to pick AJ Styles as the winner. I’d love to see Gallows and Anderson interfere in some way to help Styles get the win – it’ll help them on Raw, put Styles as super heel and won’t impact Cena at all.

This Sunday at the Royal Rumble, AJ Styles defends the WWE Championship against John Cena. If Cena wins, then he ties Ric Flair with career World Championships at 16. They have been playing around with this idea of Cena tying the record, but I don’t think they are ready to pull the trigger on it just yet. On Sunday, AJ Styles will remain the Champ that runs the Camp and the Face that Runs this Place.

Since this match was announced, I have changed my mind over who I think will walk out WWE World Champion almost every day. The year that AJ Styles has had has been truly phenomenal and personally I don’t think he should lose the title, therefore my prediction for this Sunday is AJ Styles to once again #BeatUpJohnCena. I believe it would make for more compelling TV if Cena were to lose to AJ again and I think AJ needs a big title match at Wrestlemania against the winner of the Royal Rumble (who by the way I’ve finally worked out who it should be). As for Cena despite possibly tying and then potentially beating Flair’s record, what else is left to accomplish for him? At the end of the day Cena’s name draws, if he wrestled a broomstick at Wrestlemania people would still buy the show. I agree Cena should tie and then beat Flair’s record but it shouldn’t at the expense of AJ’s phenomenal title reign.

@BigMatchSully (Monster Match Sully)
It’s a close call, they two are undoubtedly going to put on a top-class match and regardless who wins the title, the audiences will definitely have won as well. However, I’ll have to go with AJ, simply because Cena matching Flair’s record is a story worthy of a WrestleMania moment.

@TownNation (The Fox Files)
Before I give my prediction, I want to say, the few matches that these guys have had in the past have been(no pun intended) Phenomenal, and I’m sure this one will be too. But it’s the Royal Rumble, and WWE will want to deliver, so I think that Cena will tie Flairs record at the Rumble, and become 16 time World Heavyweight Champion. Just tune into The Fox Files on Monday too, as I’ll be giving my take on how I think the storyline will go!

@TomRobinson5199 (Armbar Analysis)
AJ vs Cena is a rather interesting one as I could see a title change in this match more than I can in the Universal title match. Cena winning his 16th world title would set things up nicely for him and whoever his opponent is for WrestleMania, whether it’d be Undertaker or whoever. On the other hand, I would love to see AJ Styles keep the title until Mania itself and drop the title on a bigger and grander scale. In the end, I think I’ll settle this on whether WWE feel the need to have a title change on a show as packed as this Rumble already is. I’m going to say no, as Cena’s 16th title win, in theory, should be the most talked about thing on whatever event he does it in. So I’m gonna predict that AJ wins although at Elimination Chamber, things may be a little different….

@kieranthekiz (UKayfabe)
I’m really not a big fan of WWE switching titles and keeping the belts on certain superstars purely for the fact of breaking a record or equalling it in this case. I found Nikki Bella’s title reign (to overtake AJ Lee) repetitive, same as The New Day became stale in their journey to overtake the Demolition’s Tag Title record. I think AJ Styles should hold this title up until Wrestlemania, but WWE seem so intent on giving Cena that record number of titles currently held by Ric Flair, it seems Styles would be an easy sacrifice to make.
These two are great workers together and we’ll be in for one hell of a match either way. I think should Cena win we’d need a concrete plan for Styles going forward, he deserves to be a big part of Wrestlemania.

@ZacJones_SK (Five Good / Five Bad)
As much as it pains me to say, I can’t see WWE having Styles go over Cena again. Especially since Cena has only recently returned and has a new, more aggressive attitude.
I hope I’m wrong, because AJ has been most people’s ‘Superstar of the year’ for 2016 and deserves to go into WrestleMania as champion, but like I said, I’m going to have to go for Cena on this one.

The only hope I have is that someone will interfere and cost Cena the match, maybe Samoa Joe?
