#TheWrestlingBrain – Royal Rumble Review (@callumowen98)

Well quoting Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons, ‘oh what a night’. Sunday’s Royal Rumble PPV in my opinion was really solid and enjoyable. I didn’t fall asleep until 5am and I had college only a few hours later, but nothing stopped me from staying up for my favourite WWE PPV. Now obviously I’m not going to review the whole PPV as not only would that take an eternity to write, it’d also be a long read, instead much like my NXT Monthly articles I’ll review the big talking points from Sunday night’s Royal Rumble at Chase Field.

Royal Rumble Rollins
In the main event of the Royal Rumble, Seth Rollins won the men’s Rumble match. He entered the match at No10, and eliminated Elias, Bobby Lashley and Braun Strowman. I’m assuming we’ll be getting Rollins Vs Brock Lesnar at Wrestlemania for the Universal Title, in a match I’ve been clamouring for a long time. However it’s a match that I believe Seth should win, Rollins has been the best wrestler in WWE for the last year and him beating Brock will not only possibly send Brock packing, but also make Rollins into a mega star.

BeckyMania
In what was the biggest pop of the night, Becky Lynch won the women’s Royal Rumble in entertaining and nail-biting fashion. Becky wasn’t even supposed to be in the Rumble match, however due to Lana picking up an injury, Becky would stride on down the entrance ramp and Finlay would allow her into the match, and let’s just say the rest is history. Becky is probably the most popular wrestler male or female in WWE right now, the pop she got when she walked down the ramp and then won the match was huge and is a sign how organically over she has become. At Wrestlemania we’ll either get Becky Vs Ronda or Becky Vs Ronda Vs Charlotte, but whatever the matchup is, I expect The Man to walk out of New York as Raw Women’s Champion.

World Champions Retain their Titles
In both World Title matches, Brock Lesnar and Daniel Bryan retained their titles, in two matches that received both positive and negative reaction. Brock defeated Finn Balor, in an entertaining match, which made Balor look fairly strong, but I never believed Balor would pull off the upset. In the Bryan/Styles match, the crowd seemed to be tired from the Women’s Rumble and it got the death-spot on the card. The finish of the match occurred when Erick Rowan walked down and following a ref bump, he entered the ring and choke-slammed Styles and helped Bryan retain. This was a very odd finish, as we’d not seen Rowan since around Summerslam time and for some reason he’s now helping Bryan. I’ll be intrigued what happens over the next few months with this new partnership.

Ronda and Sasha Steal the Show
Personally I thought the best non rumble match on the card, was the Raw Women’s Championship match between Ronda Rousey and Sasha Banks, throughout the match both women were countering each others moves and submissions. Over the last year, Banks has felt somewhat irrelevant with her seemingly never ending love/hate relationship with Bayley so seeing her having a great match against Ronda was refreshing. Ronda Rousey has been the best rookie in WWE of all time in my opinion, every PPV match has been a highlight of mine, and if she were to leave WWE after Wrestlemania it’d be a huge loss.

Best Team In The World
Although I think Miz is a superb heel I’m liking him in a tweener role at the moment as the tag partner of Shane McMahon. Miz and McMahon beat The Bar to become Smackdown Tag Team Champions in a fun and entertaining title match. I can understand why people don’t like Shane McMahon and they feel him pinning Cesaro and Dolph Ziggler in the last few months isn’t beneficial to anyone, but it can’t be denied that Shane O Mac puts his body on the line everytime he steps in the ring. He is the son of a billionaire, he could simply sit back in gorilla, watch wrestling and help the running of WWE, instead he decides to jump off Hell In A Cell and hit Shooting Star Presses at the age of 49, sure he’s no AJ Styles or Seth Rollins, but give the guy credit he risks it all to entertain the fans.

Nia Jax entering the Men’s Rumble
Poor R-Truth, he was rapping his way down to the ring as the No30 entrant and was viciously attacked by Nia Jax, who then became the 3rd female to enter a men’s Royal Rumble match. She eliminated Mustafa Ali, but was then Superkicked by Dolph, hit with a 619 by Rey and then Rko’d by Orton to then be eliminated. I know there was a lot of people angry with her in the match, but personally I enjoyed it, Nia being as unpopular as she is getting an RKO was incredible, and let’s face it she probably had more chance winning the match than R-Truth would’ve done.

Those are my thoughts on the Royal Rumble PPV, I hope you all enjoyed the show, and the Road To Wrestlemania has now officially begun!
